Biography

John Bennet of the Parish of Landulph in Cornwall scrivener appeareth personall and maketh oath that he hath had his usual abode in Landulph aforesaid during twenty eight days last past and that he is not related within the forbidden degrees to Martha Whitchurch of Tavistock, for the marriage of whom with him the said John Bennett licence is prayed and Tristram Physick of Tavistock Dicker maker maketh oath and saith that she the said Martha Whitchurch is an unmarried woman upward of twenty one years of age and that the said Martha Whitchurch hath had her usual abode during four weeks last past within the Parish of Tavistock aforesaid and he the said John Bennett on his oath saith that he knows no just cause why he the said John Bennett may not be lawfully married to her the said Martha Whitchurch. And the said Tristram Physick on his oath further saith that William Bennett father of the said John Benett a miner hath given his consent to the marriage of his said son John Bennett with her the said Martha Whitchurch and that a letter delivered by him & declarative of the said William Bennett’s consent to the marriage of his said son John Bennett ie relative to the said John Bennett’s marriage with her the said Martha Whitchurch (though the name of the said Martha Whitchurch is accidentally omitted in the said letter) & that the said letter is of the proper handwriting of him the said William Bennett. Sworn 18 December 1786 before Rev John Gardy of Plymouth. Signed by John Bennett and Trism Physick. [DRO Exeter Marriage Licences, Chanter 134 p.180] John Bennett of 18 Oxford Row, Plymouth, buried 9 Aug 1832 aged 66 at St Andrew Plymouth.

  • marriage licence. John seems to have died 6 August 1832 in Plymouth district intestate, but was not buried at Tavistock. His estate was administered by Martha on 21 March 1834.
