August, the son of construction carpenter Anders Bengtsson and its wife Elna Isaksdotter, was born in Högseröd parish 27 July 1842.[1]
According to the household record for Västerstad parish, started in 1844, Anders Bengtsson with family had moved to a farm in Gummastorp, Västerstad, in 1843. They had two daughters, Elin (1845) and Anna (1848-1848) and one more son, Axel (1849).[2] In the next household record there is also a son Isak (1853). The family is noted as baptists. August's mother died in 1859 and he himself went to Äsphult parish to work the same year.[3]
In Äsphult August was in the household of parish tailor Pål Olsson, whose wife was also a baptist (the children in the family were as yet unbaptized). August was in the book as August Andersson. He was presumably an apprentice to the tailor. He left for Ängelholm in 1861.[4]
In Ängelholm August Andersson from Högseröd (a baptist) was an apprentice with the tailor Hans Sundberg. He moved out in 1862 (destination unknown).[5] In the moving-in book for Storkyrkoförsamlingen, Stockholm, August turns up 30 November 1863 as August Bengtsson. He has papers from Ängelholm, dated 4 Aug 1863, and has, according to his own statement, been in Denmark in the intervening months.[6]
Already in February 1864 August left Stockholm. According to the moving-out book he intended to go to Jönköping.[7] but in February 1864 August turns up in Söderhamn : journeyman tailor August Bengtsson, born in Höxeröd 27 July 1842, a baptist, arrived from Stockholm St Nicolai. He was in the household of Master tailor Hans Lindberg, whose household was so big that it occupied two pages in the book, with the travelling journeymen on the second page.[8]
In September 1865 August Bengtsson reappeared in Söderhamn, again arriving from Stockholm. This time he was in the household of Tailor Master Frans Axel Sundberg. He left in March 1866, destination unknown.[9]
The next thing we know about August Bengtson is that he was naturalized in the United States 31 October 1890. He still has a birth date 27 July 1842, born in Sweden. He arrived to New York 1 October 1873. His current address is in Providence and the witnesses on the document are his two brothers-in-law August Lundstedt and Charles Lundstedt.[10] August Bengtsson had married their sister, Amanda Djerf 21 December 1878.[11]
There is a record for August in the 1905 census for Rhode Island. The handwriting is awful, and the census record somewhat strangely organized (covering two sides of a card), so there has been some errors in transcription - the surname looks like Bengstud, may be intended as Bengston. Birth date may be 25 June 1842 (Chinese whispers). Immigration year 1873. A tailor and a baptist.[12]
