Was Jesse a twin brother of James? Note that Jesse does not appear in the list of Samuel's children posted below.
Research Notes

Re: The post below. I believe it is a copy of a c1999 old posting by my friend Marsha Bentley. There are errors . . . but consider these early notes from when we were trying to figure the VA Bentleys. This is Marsha's husband's Bentley line.
FYI: Marsha's husband by DNA is a proved descendant of John and Mary Ellis Bentley. Also, Marsha is very thorough! --- gfb
Circa 1999 Post: Samuel Bentley
SAMUEL BENLEY b. abt 1739, (son of JOHN b. abt 1710) m. JANE SPICER bef.1767 (daughter of JAMES SPICER AND DAUGHTER BENTLEY) [Error Note: We now know Jane is NOT the D/o the JAMES SPICER AND DAUGHTER BENTLEY here referred to by Marsha. gfb] -- He married his cousin??? She was born abt 1750 in Halifax Co. He then married a LUCY??? (this may have been mixed up with WILLIAM who married LUCY HARRIS...)
They had six children:
SAMUEL (some give him a middle name of HENRY-but I think not) BENTLEY b. July 12, 1772 in Halifax Co. M. NANCY LEGRAND Sept 25, 1795 in Halifax, d. July 10, 1839 or 1858 in Forsyth Co. GA. It is from these that my family descends, and I have hundreds and hundreds of Bentley's well documented from here [. . . This sounds like it is from Marsha. gfb]
JAMES BENTLEY b. May 16, 1774 Halifax Co. VA.
WILLIAM BENTLEY b. abt 1776 m. Nancy WILLS Jan 27,1796 Halifax Co.
DAUGHTER BENTLEY
SARAH BENTLEY b. May 9, 1783 Halifax Co. m. Andrew Lowrymore 14 Oct. 1808 Elbert Co., GA
JOHN ELLIS BENTLEY b. Oct. 14 or 24, 1778 in Halifax Co. VA d. 1857 Coosa Co.or Chambers Co. Alabama.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
