Biography

Herbert was born on 11 May 1856 in London, England. He was the son of Mattathias Bentwich and Rose (Levy) Bentwich. Note: birth listed as 1857 in 1911 census^[1]

When Herbert was 24 he married Susan Solomon on 14 December 1880. The couple had 11 children: Lilian Ruth Bentwich, Norman De Mattos Bentwich, Rosalind Nita Bentwich, Margery Bentwich, Muriel Bentwich, Naomi Bentwich, Hebe Rachel Bentwich, Thelma Bentwich, Carmel Bentwich, Joseph Solomon Bentwich and Dorothy Bentwich.^[2]

In the 1901 census Herbert (age about 44) was living in London, England.^[3]

In 1932 Herbert (age about 75) was employed as a a jurist. Note: Authority on copyright law.^[4]

Herbert died at the age of 76 in 1932 in Zichron Yaacov, Israel.^[4]

Research Notes

Note: English mother, Polish father. British Zionist leader and lawyer. Began his legal career as an attorney to Sir Moses Montefiore and helped shape the 1917 Balfour Declaration. As grand commander of the Order of Ancient Maccabeans, a Zionist organization (1901-14), he was delegate to several Zionist congresses. (see: Universal Jewish Encyclopedia). The OCLC listing shows his birth & death dates same as Herbert, but names him as Herman.
