Of Gledhow Hall, Leeds, Yorkshire. He was a merchant & draper in Shrewsbury, but later moved his business to Leeds, where he established a modern linen mill. he married Jane Daltera (d 1828), and they had six children: Thomas, Joseph, Henry Bonbonus (d 1849), Mary, Emma and Jane Lydia (d 1826).
