Biography

Henry Berney, Esq., was the son and heir of John Berney, Esq., and his first wife,[1] Margaret Reade.[2][3][4] Henry may have been born at Reedham or Langley, Norfolk, where his father held lands. His date of birth is unknown and is estimated based on the following: his father was born about 1510, his mother died in 1548, and Henry was the eldest son of eight children.

Henry married Alice Appleton, daughter of Roger Appleton,[4] Esq., and Agnes Clarke.[1][2] The date of their marriage is unknown and is estimated. They had five sons and three daughters:

Henry removed the family seat near Reedham church to Reedham park, where he built Park Hall in 1557.[1]

Henry died in 1584/5,[1] leaving a will proved 9 May 1585.[2][5][6] His will names wife Alice; daughters Ann, Margaret and Maria (Mary); sons Henry, John, Richard, and Thomas; and his brother Robert.[6]

Alice survived Henry and had a monument erected at Reedham with "the arms of Berney, quartering Redham, gules, a chevron engrailed, between three reed sheafs, or, in the 2d quarter; in the 3d, Caston, gules, a chevron between three eagles displayed, argent, and Berney in the 4th quarter, impaling Appleton, argent, a fess engrailed, sable, between three apples, leaved proper, and - - - - quarterly".[1] Both Henry and Alice were buried at Reedham, Norfolk.[2]

Henry Berney Esq. is a descendant of Magna Carta Surety Barons Saher de Quincy, John de Lacy, Gilbert de Clare and Richard de Clare in trails that were project approved/badged in May 2015 by the Magna Carta Project to Gateway Ancestors Marmaduke Beckwith and Edmund Jennings. Badged trails from Beckwith/Jennings to sureties William d'Aubigny and Robert de Ros were connected later. This profile also appears in a badged trail from Beckwith and Jennings to surety barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod that was developed in Autumn 2022. Trails to the aforementioned surety barons are outlined in the Magna Carta Trails section of both Gateway's profiles: Beckwith and Jennings.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

I'm working on the earlier Berney generations and the profile of Thomasine (Berney) Osborne, his sister. I may add some material relevant to this profile if I come across it.
