He retired from the St. Louis County Library-Oak Bend branch where he was custodian for 10 years. He bowled in the Senior Olympics for 21 years and was a member of the Hardee Boys Breakfast Group. He served in the United States Navy in WWII from 1942 to 1946 in the European--African and Middle Eastern Theaters as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class. [2]

"There is one thing that John never talked about that was D day. tomorrow is the 70th anniversary and he had just turned 19. he did say that they took the fuel from the ship he was on and they did not think they were going. next thing some of them were transferred to another ship and off they went. I asked what was it like to have another person wanting to kill you that you didn't know. (dumb question) he said that you didn't think about that.there was so much confusion and noise, so much to do ,so much went wrong,it was so loud. they were off loaded and went back for more. I have seen programs about D day and Friday there is something on tv about it, it is hard for me to picture my easy going, gentle boy in all of this." - Joann Bernstetter, June 5th, 2014

Our uncle, great-uncle, cousin and friend. John volunteered to serve in the US Navy Armed Guard during World War II. VISITATION TUESDAY 4 to 8 p.m. If desired, donations may be made to Hope Hospice or the St. Laboure Indian Mission."
