James Best was born in Drayton, Somerset, and baptised at the Wesleyan-Methodist Chapel of South Petherton on the 19th of April, 1854, at the age of 8 weeks. He was the son of Joseph Best, a canal lock keeper, and Hannah Gillett.[1][2]
In 1871 James was living with his parents at Drayton and working for the canal navigation company.[3]
James married Alice Maud Latham in Queensland, Australia on the 29th of June, 1878.[4]
In 1891 he was living in Croydon, New South Wales.[5]
Mr. James Best, whose death occurred last week at the age of 72 years, was born at Langport, Somerset, England, and arrived in New South Wales about 47 years ago. He was well known in business circles, having been for about 25 years proprietor of Hall's Mercantile Agency, and for 15 years governing director of S. Freeman and Sons, Ltd. At one time he was a member of the Enfield Council. Mr. Best is survived by a widow, two sons, and five daughters. Among those at the funeral at the Northern Suburbs Cemetery were Messrs: V. F. Best (son), A. E. Jobson (Son-ln-law), P. Jobson (grandson), R. Dick (nephew), G. Stevens (Henry Berry and Co., Pty., Ltd.), A. R. Douglass (Newcastle-Wallsend Coal Company, Ltd.), V. Chorley (Kitchener, Ltd,), and J. McArthur. The Rev. Ronald Cameron, of Turramurra, officiated at the graveside.
