Biography

The immigrant for our Bevard line was Charles Bevard, who was born in about 1722 in County Donegal. The year of his immigration is unknown to me, but he was married in Baltimore, Maryland in 1752. The name of his wife is reported as Mary Mears and as Mary Siddell. (Mears may have been her maiden name and Siddell her first husband’s name, or visa versa. The date and place of death given for Mary Mears and Mary Sidell are the same.) One Bevard descendant posted the following: Most information about Charles Bevard states that he was married to Mary Mears. In a letter to Florence (Mrs. Bradley) Bradley, my father's sister, dated 26 September 1931 from Marion Bevard Inglehart, she says she has a very old book that was brought with them from Ireland giving births, deaths, etc. She wrote that in this book is written that Charles Bevard was born in the County Donnegall, Parish of Donoughmore and that he married Mary Siddell and that she died on the 22nd day of Oct 1820, aged 89 years, and that James Bevard is the son of Charles Bevard, born 27 November 1762, married 2 April 1795 to Polly Shidle, born 2 April 1779, died Nov 1817. Charles and Mary settled in Harford County, Maryland. As the Revolution approached, the Maryland Provincial Assembly called for militia companies to be enrolled in 1776. Company 17 was led by Captain John Patrick, and on 1 April 1776, Charles and his son James enrolled as privates. Both signed the Declaration of the Association of the Freemen of Maryland in 1776, listed as being from “Deer Creek Lower.” In 1778, his name was included in Harford County Document “A List of Persons that have taken the Oath of Fidelity to Support this State Agreeable to an Act of Assembly Initiated An Act for the Better Support of the GoCharles and Mary had five children born between 1754 and 1762: John, Thomas, William, Susanna, and the ancestor James. Charles wrote his will on 30 November 1816. At least three of his children had pre-deceased him, and based on his will, probably all of his children were dead - he left whatever he had first to his wife Mary and then to the children of his son James. The will stated:

“In the name of God Amen. I, Charles Bevard of Harford County, in the State of Maryland, being weak in body but of sound disposing mind, memory and understanding, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say. First and principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God, and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor, herein after named, and after my debts and funeral expenses are paid, it is my will and desire that my beloved wife, Mary, shall possess the whole of my property, both real and personal, during her natural life, and after her decease that the same shall be divided between the children of my son James, share and share alike, to them their heirs and assigns forever: - and lastly I do hereby constitute and do appoint my son James to be my sole executor of this my last will and testament revoking and annulling all former wills be heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and none other, to be my last will and testament. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Thirtyeth day of November in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and sixteen.”

He died on 5 December 1817 in Harford County. Mary died there on 22 October 1820 vernment.”
