Thomas Bewley, second son of Thomas and Dorothy Bewley of Woodhall and Haltcliffe Hall, Cumberland, was born around 1635 in Woodhall. He married Margaret, daughter of Thomas Mark of Mosedale, in March 1657. He was admitted tenant of Woodhall by surrender by his father, on 12 November 1661, He rebuilt the house in 1669, leaving the initials of himself and his wife over the entrance. He was prosecuted for nonpayment of tithes in 1676 and imprisoned in Carlisle gaol for upwards of five years. He was buried on 26 May 1693 at Whelpo, Cumberland.[1]
