Biography

Joan was the daughter of Sir Hugh Bigod and Joan de Stuteville.[1][2] Her birth date is not known: it has been guesstimated as about 1255 on the basis that her son William, who his father's heir, was said to be 40 and more at his father's death in 1323. Her first name is given by a confirmation by her husband of a grant to Bullington Priory, Lincolnshire "for his salvation and that of Joan his wife".[3]

Joan married Philip de Kyme, son of William de Kyme and Lucy de Roos.[1][2][3] Philip's wardship and marriage had been granted to her father.[4][5] They had three children:

Joan's death date is not known.

Joan (Bigod) de Kyme appears in a trail, identified and badged by the Magna Carta Project in 2015, between Gateway Ancestor Katherine Hamby and Magna Carta Surety Barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod. This trail is outlined in the Magna Carta Trails section of Robert Hamby's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
