Cecil Martin Billard, 98, a resident of Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, and formerly of 33 Wilkie Ave., North Sydney, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Born in Grand Bruit, Nfld., he was a son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Melbourne) Billard. He worked many years of his life as a fisherman and later as a stevedore with CN Marine, North Sydney, until his retirement. He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, of the North Sydney Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club and he enjoyed carpentry very much. Surviving are son, Ron (Genevieve), Sudbury, Ont.; two sons-in-law, Gordon Matthews, North Sydney, with whom he resided for many years and Harold Keeping, North Sydney; two daughters-in-law, Joan Billard, Halifax, and Marjorie Billard, Springdale, Nfld.; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Billard was predeceased by his wife, Dora Billard; two daughters, Claretta Matthews and Shirley Keeping; two sons, Willis Billard and Roy Billard; a grandson, David Billard; three brothers, Archibald, James and Wesley; and his sister, Rebecca. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service Tuesday 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to Miners Memorial Manor or to a charity of one's choice.
