Biography

John L. Billups

Origins

John L. was born in 1757 in Halifax County, Virginia, the eldest child of Edward Billups and Sarah Casey.[1]

John's father Edward Billups died in Montgomery County, Va (now W .V.) in 1822 leaving a will naming children: John, Edward, Thomas, Richard, William, Elizabeth, Lucy, Margaret and Sally.[2]

Marriages

John may have married twice.

  • John married, as his first, an unknown wife.
  • John married between 9 January and 1 April in 1807 at Kanawah County, poss. as his 2nd, to Margaret Douthat.[3] Marriage was performed by Rev. John Lee and recorded as "Jno Billips & Paggy Douthat" (transcribed as Peggy Doushat).[3]

Offices

The first session of the Common Pleas Court in the newly formed Burlington County, Ohio was held July 7, 1817, John Thompson was president of the Second District Court, and the Grand Jury included Edward Billups as foreman and John Billups as a member.[4]

Location: Halifax Co. formed from Lunenburg Co. in 1752.

Multiple John Billups:

Another (?) John Billups was born on 22 Mar 1756, son of Robert and Ann Billups. His birth was recorded at the Episcopal Church, Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia.[5]

John was born in 1767. He passed away in 1835.

Acknowledgments

Much of the research on John Billups and the other early Billups' was done in the 1960-1970's by Benjamin Billups, a descendant. Benjamin wrote letters to Kenneth Billups (the uncle of Brenda Dodson). Brenda had copies of those letters, but unfortunately no knowledge of what happened to Benjamin's original research. She was also unable to determine which line of decent Benjamin belonged to. We are indebted to Benjamin for the excellent start those letters provided in search for information on this family.
