Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Joseph Billups Sr was a Virginia colonist.

Joseph Billups, Sr of Amelia, Prince Edward and Lunenburg Counties[1]

Origin

Joseph Billups, Sr was born in 1697[1] in Mobjack Bay, Gloucester, Virginia. (place of birth may not be based on evidence?) He was a son of John Billups (c.1660—1709) and Mary Glasscock.[2][1]

Marriage

Joseph married in 1719 in Gloucester, Virginia to Margaret Lilly, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Billups) Lilly.[1] Gayle N. Mandell believes that Joseph and Margaret had six children.[1] Mandell lists only two, John who married Mary Lilly, and Lucretia in "Gale/Gayle Families of Great Britain & Ireland."[1]

Lunenburg County

Joseph apparently continued to live in Gloucester County, but he also held land in Lunenburg County, and this is where his sons first settled as adults (?)[2] On 1 October 1751, Joseph purchased 625 acres on both sides of both forks of Ledbetter Creek from James Oliver.[2] (Interestingly, the name, "James Oliver" continued in the Billups family) This land was later to be owned by Joseph, Jr. (grandson of Jospeh, Sr.?) (?) Note: McCafee may be confounding two different Joseph Billups, Jr.s see profile for Joseph Billups, Jr..

Mandell reports Joseph was "of Amelia, Prince Edward and Lunenburg Counties."[1]

Death & Legacy

Joseph died in 1767 in Gloucester County, Virginia.[citation needed] He either died intestate, or his will has not survived.[2]

Children

Children:[1]

  1. John Billups married on 3/31/1757 to Mary Lilly and had two children
  2. Lucretia or Susanna "Sukey" (Billups); mar Matthew Gayle[2]

John W.Pritchett, another researcher, calls the daughter, Lucretia, “Lukey,” who married to Matthew Gayle.[3] Gayle N. Mandell agrees that the daughter who married Matthew Gayle was named Lucretia.[1] Possibly the nick-name "Sukey" was mis-read as "Lukey"?

Research Notes

According to Jerry McAfee, Joseph was a son of John Billups and Mary Glascock (without evidence or sources).[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
