Joshua was born in 1813 in Tennessee, the son of Rev. William Bird and Lydia Adair Bird.
Joshua married Elizabeth Ellis, the daughter of Abraham Ellis and Prudence Lindsey Ellis, [1] on 1 March 1835 in Perry, Tennessee. They had at least the following children:

Joshua died on 1 Nov 1862 of hepatitis in St Louis, Missouri and was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA. [2]
