Biography

1776 Project
Joshua Bird served with 5th Virginia Regiment (1776), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Joshua's origins are unknown. He was likely born around 1755 in either Virginia or Maryland. His parents are undocumented. It is plausible to assume his only son Francis was named after his grandfather but there is no proof.

He is documented in Louisa Co. and King George's Co. in 1771 and 1776, respectively. DNA results demonstrate common descents from Francis Bird and Jane Littleton.[1]

He first appearance in the historical record is an enumeration in the tithable list in Louisa Co., Virginia in 1771, when he presumably had just turned 16 years old. By 1776 he was resident in King George's Co., where he joined the Continental army. He served as a common soldier from 1776-1779. After the war he is believed to have married Drusilla Bell from Frederick Co., Maryland and settled in Prince William Co., Virginia. He and his family migrated to Nelson Co., Kentucky around the turn of the century where he spent the remainder of his life. He died in 1839.

Research Notes

Origins

Joshua’s origins are undocumented. Family lore identifies him as “Scotch-Irish”,[2] and DNA suggests the family resided in northern Ireland for 175-200 generations prior to its American immigration.[3] It also references “three brothers, one who went to Virginia, one who went to Tennessee and one who went to Kentucky.”

This appears to be a conflation of two separate elements. The “three brothers” may refer to the three sons of Francis Bird and Jane Littleton. There are pervasive DNA links between Joshua’s descendants and descendants of Benjamin Allison and his unknown wife, suggesting a sister as well. The geographical references probably refer to emigrations of the grandchildren and subsequently conflated by his descendants.

Childhood

His presence in Trinity Parish, Louisa Co., Virginia in 1771 suggests some sort of link between Joshua and:

  • A John Bird who worked as a slave overseer for David Cosby. Circumstantial evidence suggests this may have been his father.
  • a "George Bird" who appears in Trinity Parish in 1777 and 1778.
  • a possible connection to the family of John Bird and Sarah Jones, though DNA tests between descendants tends to mitigate any any relation.

Lines of Interest

The name of his only son - Francis Bird - suggests the name of his father and is the best piece of etymological evidence in tracing near-descendants. While none of the foregoing have been documented as related, the following lines may provide relevant data for future researchers:

  • Bird families residing in modern-day Montgomery Co., Maryland,[4] which include:
    • Francis Bird, husband of Jane Littleton and father of three sons - John Bird, Thomas Bird and Francis Bird - who resided in Rock Creek Hundred in the 1730s
    • Francis Bird who appears in the 1790 Federal Census. This man kept two slaves, indicating at least a modicum of wealth. There is likewise a neighbor link to the Dyson family, which reoccurs 40 years later with a Kentucky-born George Bird who immigrated to Montgomery Co, and married a Dyson girl.
  • Bird families residing in Prince George's Co., Maryland, which include:
  • Bird families from Southwest Virginia, which include:
    • Francis Bird of Russell Co. and Washington (now Scott) Co., husband of Hannah Blakemore, widow of William Duncan. She was born in Lancaster Co., adjacent to Northumberland Co. and on the same peninsula as King George's Co.
    • Thomas Bird of Robertson Co., Tennessee, who had a son named Francis Bird and was purported to be one of three brothers who removed from Pittsylvania Co. to Washington Co. in the 1770s and then to Sumner and Robertson Co., Tennessee in the 1790s.[5]
  • Bird families in early Tennessee
    • Francis Bird, who originated in Davidson Co. in 1787,[6]was in Montgomery Co. by 1801,[7]settled along the Elk River on Chickasaw Indian lands in modern-day Limestone Co., Alabama by 1810[8]and in Giles Co., Tennessee by 1820.[9]
    • Francis Bird of Hawkins Co., Tennessee[10]
