Biography

European Aristocracy
Magnus Birgersson was a member of the aristocracy in Sweden.

Origin

Magnus was born around 1240 as the son of Birger Magnusson, aka Birger Jarl and his wife princess Ingeborg Eriksdotter.

Name(s)

His byname "Magnus Ladulås" is first mentioned in "Visbykrönikan" from 1412, he was probably not called that during his life. In 1385 he is called "king Magnus the old" in order to not be confused with his grandchild Magnus Eriksson. Another theory by historians was that he was called Ladislaus, the Latin form of Slavic name Vladislav (connected to his mothers ancestors).

In literature outside Scandinavia, he is sometimes called Magnus III.

Fight for the Crown

Valdemar, Magnus' older brother, was elected king when their uncle king Erik Eriksson (Erik XI, the Lisp, and Lame) died in 1250.[1]

After the father's death in 1266, the brothers openly fought against each other with Valdemar on one side and Magnus and the younger brother Erik on the other. In 1275 Valdemar was defeated at Hova in Västergötland and July 22 that year Magnus was elected king on the Stones of Mora and was crowned May 24 the following year. [2]

Spouse(s) and Children

The same year as his coronation, 1276, Magnus married Helvig, the daughter of Count Gerhard I of Holstein and Elisabet of Mecklenburg. Together they had six children.[1]

  • Erik, died young
  • Ingeborg (ca 1277 - 1319) married king Erik Menved, king of Denmark
  • Birger (1280 - 1321) king of Sweden
  • Erik (1282 - 1318) Duke of Södermanland
  • Rikissa (1283 - 1348) abbess at St. Clare's Priory in Stockholm
  • Valdemar (1285 - 1318) Duke of Finland

Death and Burial

Magnus died December 18, 1290, on the island of Visingsö. According to the journals of the Franciscan monks, the farmers carried him on their shoulders all the way to Stockholm where he was buried in the Riddarholm church, which then was the convent church of the Greyfriars. He had chosen the location of his burial in 1285 and demanded that his body would be taken there if he died outside of Stockholm. He had even gotten the pope's approval to be buried there. The monks placed a well visible epitaph in the church with the text "Sucka, Sverige, begråt den avlidne fursten, som skyddat dig och regereat ytterst rättvist. Här ligger begraven kungarnas blomma, lagarnas upphov och förebild, den milde kung Magnus" (Sigh, Sweden, morn the dead ruler, who protected you and ruled very fairly. Here lays buried the flower of kings, the creator of the laws and role model, the mild king Magnus).[1]

  • Duke of Sweden from the beginning of the 1250's.[2]
