Bishop Services Planned Saturday
Grover W. Bishop, 67, well-known gospel singer and teacher, and resident of 1422 St. Francis Drive, died Thursday afternoon at Mississippi Baptist Medical Hospital Center following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Wright and Ferguson with Dr. H. A. Milner officiating. Following the services, Mr. Bishop will be taken to Goshen Baptist Church near Magee at 2 p.m. to lie instate until 3 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. and burial will follow in the Magee Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, the former Pearl Kelly; three daughters, Mrs. Juanita Clark, Jackson, Mrs. Pansy Dear, Pearl and Patricia Ann Berry; four grandchildren, three brothers, Melvin Bishop and George Bishop, both of Magee and Jimmy Bishop, Decatur, Ala; three sisters, Mrs. Lola Canoy and Mrs. Oree Fortenberry, both of Magee and Mrs. Lucille Toles [sic, s/b Towles], Luling, La.
Mr. Bishop was a native of Magee and had lived in Jackson since 1954. He was a retired foreman of bridge maintenance, Mississippi Highway Department. He was a member of Van Winkle Baptist Church.
Friends may call at Wright and Ferguson after 2 p.m. today.[6]
Research Notes
According to Tennie Jones Bishop (sister-in-law to Grover), Grover and Pearl had a set of twins, died at birth buried at Magee Cemetery but no headstone found. Now a grave marker has been placed next to her family. Bishop-4082 14:42, 31 July 2016 (EDT)
Grover Bishop interviewed Sullivans from the Hollow for the WPA (Works Projects Administration) in the late 1930s when the government was trying to put people back to work, part of the New Deal Agency (employed musicians, artists, writers, actors and directors in large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects) they even surveyed cemeteries! the MS archives is supposed to have a copy of this unpublished manuscript.
