Biography

JOSIAH BLACK baptized Jul 1, 1710 at Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts [1] married Mary Black, daughter of Josiah Black and Mary Black, Mar 4, 1733 married By Jerimah Moulton Esq[2] died at York, York, Maine. He resided in 1731 at Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts. In the York records of the births of Josiah's children he is referred to as Josiah Jun'er. Many have assumed that he must be the son of Josiah as indicated by the Jun'er. Here the jun'er was used to indicate the younger of the two Josiah Blacks in the York area. On February 21, 1761 a petition of men of York, requesting a land grant for service "in the late wars" which includes the name of Josiah Black and Josiah Black Jun'r. The land granted in 1764, was one of the six townships east of the Penobscot River. Sedgwick was formerly No 4; [3]

JOHN [4] born Apr 14, 1736 at York, York, Maine [5]married Abigail Watson, daughter of Shadrack Watson and Susanna Kimball, circa 1763; died Apr, 1832 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; [6]he was buried at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine[7] In 1758, John Black, Corporal, is recorded as serving in the York militia in Colonel Jedediah Preble's company under Captain James Gowen of Kittery. John Black served in the Revolutionary War. John and Abigail were one of the three first families to settle on Naskeag Point in the spring of 1763.
  • ii. MEHITABLE; Black, Research by George Leonard, page 9; born Aug 18, 1737 at York, York, Maine; Bragdon, Vital Records of York; married John Rice May 5, 1764.
  • iii. DANIEL; born circa 1738 at York, Maine; married Mary (--?--) circa 1760; died Apr, 1832 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; unknown author, Zion Advocate (n.p.: n.pub., 1833). He appeared on the census of 1790 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine. was shown with 1 male under 16 and 4 females, including his wife.
  • iv. ABIGAIL; born 1743 at York, Maine; married Reuben Gray, son of Joshua Gray and Jennat Elliot, Apr 1, 1763 at Hancock, Maine; died Aug 24, 1820 at Brooksville, Hancock, Maine; G.H. Tapley, compiler, Brooksville Vital Records (Brewer, Maine: Cey-Bel Publishing Co., c1986). Hereinafter cited as Brooksville Vital Records; she was buried at Walker's Cemetery, Brooksville, Hancock, Maine; Almon A. and Walter A. Snow Gray, compiler, The Gray Family of Hancock County, Maine (Blue Hill, Maine: Almon A. Gray, 1987).

MOSES; born circa 1751; married Elizabeth Freethy, daughter of Joseph Freethy and Elisabeth Banks, Feb 16, 1782 at North Yarmouth, Cumberland, Maine; died Dec 22, 1829 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; Maine State Library, Augusta, Kennebec, Maine 04330; he was buried at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; [8] He began military service in Feb, 1777; a Private under Captain William Porter, Colonel Francis (afterward Colonel Tupper's) regiment of Massachusetts. He was at the capture of Burgoyne and the battle of Monmoth and Stony Point. He ended military service on Feb 17, 1780; Records show that payment had been made at $8 per month until his death. Moses has not been proven to be the son of Josiah Black. Some believe him to be the son of another son of Josiah, John Black. John was 16 at the time of Moses's birth.
