Carlyle Blackwell was an American silent film actor and a minor director and producer.[1]
"He made his film debut in the 1910 Vitagraph Studios production of Uncle Tom's Cabin directed by J. Stuart Blackton. Between then and 1930, when talkies ended his acting career, he appeared in more than 180 films. For his contribution to the motion picture industry, Blackwell has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6340 Hollywood Boulevard. In his later years he was also active as a producer and writer. After his final film in 1930, Blackwell turned to performing on stage in live theatre."[2]
Blackwell was born 20 Jan 1884 in Syracuse, New York.[3]
He was married seven times, with three of the marriages to the same person.
His first wife was actress Ruth Hartman, mother of his daughter and son. Carlyle and Ruth were married 8 July 1909. They were divorced November 1922 after Ruth charged Carlyle with desertion.[4]
The couple were married on July 8, 1909. After appearing in several pictures with him. Mrs. Blackwell brought suit for separation on May 16, 1917 in New York, alleging abandonment and characterizing her husband as "The Romeo of the Movies." In his reply he declared that she was "camera crazy." They have two children, Esther and Carlyle.
Then in 1926 he married his second wife Leah Barnato, known as the "Queen of Diamonds". She was the daughter of a South African diamond millionaire and sister of Woolf Barnato. They were married three times:[5]
To untangle and explain the three marriages of Carlyle and Leah would tax the skill of a college professor of mathematics. The first was announced about a year and a half ago [May 1925] when London newspapers chronicled the fact that it had been solemnized in Berlin. Five months later [November 1925] Haxton named Blackwell co-respondent in a divorce suit. Upon the legal termination of the case, there was a second announcement from Berlin saying that the Blackwells had gone through another ceremony. The third marriage took place in this city [London] in the Prince's Row Registry Office.
Their third marriage took place 29 July 1926 at the Princes Row Registry Office in London, England.[6]
His third wife was former Ziegfield girl Avonne Taylor, whom he met on a transatlantic crossing and married in 1933 after divorcing Leah Blackwell in 1932. Avonne and Carlyle were married 26 march 1933 in Reno, Nevada:[7]
Reno, Nev., March 25--(AP)--A meeting aboard ship two years ago ended in marriage here today for Carlyle Blackwell, the Clark Gable of early American films, and Miss Avonne Taylor, former Ziegfeld beauty and divorced wife of Thomas Manville, Jr.
Blackwell and Miss Taylor were married less than six hours after his divorce from the former Leah Barnato, British "Queen of Diamonds." The marriage was Blackwell's third.
He married Nancy Emmons, a widow, 1946 in Dade County, Florida.[8] They were married for two years.
On 15 April 1948, he married Victoria Ann Enoch in Dade County, Florida.[9] This marriage lasted until his death.
