Biography

Flag of Virginia
Native Virginian

The Hon Samuel Blackwell was born 23 Sep 1680 in St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland, Virginia.[1] He was the only known child of Joseph Blackwell and Margaret Downman (aka Downeman).

Samuel's first wife died after having given birth to their only son, Samuel, who was born in January, 1710-11 in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland, Virginia. He married for his second wife, shortly thereafter, before 20 Mar 1710, Margery (Downing) Hudnall, recent widow (bef 18 Aug 1709) of Joseph Hudnall. Samuel and Margery had four known children: [2]

  1. William,
  2. Joseph, 9 Jul 1715
  3. Elizabeth, 9 Jan 1717
  4. Hannah, 30 Mar 1720

He died before 17 Jun 1730 and is buried at Walnut Lodge, Northumberland, Virginia.[3] According to that site, his will was probated on 17 Jun 1730, but confusion arises from the fact that there is a marble tablet in the Court-room of the Northumberland Co. Court House, to the memory of a number of this distinguished family, listing Samuel's year of death as 1732. Additionally, Mrs. Stella Pickett Hardy whose articles about the Blackwell Family appeared in the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography[4] states within the same paragraph that there is that tablet in Northumberland Court House, and that he died on 5 Aug 1732. My question is, where did she get that 5 Aug date? It seems very easy to pick up the 1732 date from the tablet and believe it to be accurate, but her report adds the date. Another question is about his will. I see that someone has written that it was probated on 17 Jun 1730, but I have thus far been unable to find that document or even an abstract online. I'm wondering if the will was WRITTEN in 1730 and probated 5 Aug 1732, or thereabouts.

Research Notes

  • This profile lists seven children for Samuel. The additional two children are both named Lucy, and one of those was born in Stafford County. It would be wise to research these young ladies a bit more, perhaps finding a different Samuel for them. The list that reports the other five children, Register of St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland County,[1] as well as Samuel's birth lists all five consecutively, and Samuel further down the list, with no other Blackwells on the page.
  • See above discussion about Samuel's date of death. A will or abstract must be found. It must exist since we know people have written about it. Or perhaps a record from St Stephens.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

I have recently come across quite a few books that discuss a lot about his military career. If you would like I could compile a list of these or even try to add that information to this profile. Which ever you prefer works for me.
