Biography

This profile is part of the Blanchard Name Study.

Martin Blanchard was born around 1647.[1] His father was Jean Blanchard, who has been described as the ancestral patriarch of the Acadian Blanchard family. Martin's mother was Radegonde Lambert.

In 1671, Martin married Francoise LeBlanc.[1] He was 24 years old, and she was 18. Martin and Francoise had their own entry in the 1671 Census of Port-Royal. However, as is typical with early Acadian censuses, both Martin and Francoise were each named in their parents' households as well.[2] Martin fathered three children with Francoise between 1672 and 1677: #Francoise, Marie and #Rene.[1]

  • Marie-Rosalie, born in Port-Royal c1674

Martin's first wife died prior to the census of 1686, and subsequently he married 18-year-old Marguerite Guilbeau.[1]

Their children were:

  • Marguerite, born in Port-Royal c1689
  • Pierre, born in Port-Royal c1692
  • Martin, born in Port-Royal c1693
  • Unnamed girl, born in Port-Royal c1695
  • Joseph, born in Cobequid c1697
  • Marie-Isabelle, born in Cobequid c1700
  • Marie-Marguerite, born in Cobequid between 1703 & 1707
  • Jean-Baptiste, born in Cobequid c1712

In 1686, at Port Royal, Martin BLANCHARD, aged 38, was living with his second wife, Marguerite GUILEBAULT [sic], aged 18, and three children he had with his first wife, Francoise LEBLANC: Francoise, aged 14, Marie [sic], aged 12, and Rene, aged 9. They owned 1 gun and were living on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 9 cattle, 12 sheep, and 7 hogs.[3]

In 1693, at Port Royal, Martin BLANCHARD, aged 48, was living with his wife, Marguerite GUILBAUT [sic], aged 24, and his four children: Marie [sic], aged 18, Rene, aged 16, Marguerite, aged 4, and Pierre, aged 1. The family acquired more land and livestock and seemed to prosper. The family now owned 1 gun and was living on 10 arpents of cultivable land with 15 cattle, 16 sheep, and 12 pigs.[4]

From 1688-1697, however, New France was at war with New England.[5] Port-Royal was under frequent attack by the English, and in 1695, English authorities required the Acadian inhabitants at Port-Royal to sign an oath of allegiance to King William III of England. Martin was one of many family heads that made his mark on the document attesting to the oath, perhaps in the hope of avoiding further English persecution[6][7]

By 1698, Martin and Marguerite had three children born in Port-Royal: Marguerite, Pierre and Martin.[1][8]

After the 1700 Port-Royal census,[9] Martin and his family left Port-Royal. They were one of three families that joined Mathieu Martin at his settlement at Cobequid to be his first tenant farmers.[10] It appears that Martin Blanchard may have gone to Cobequid ahead of his family, because his name appears alone in the Cobequid census of 1701.[11] However, his family did join him there.[12] Martin and Marguerite had four more children[13][14][15] and lived their remaining years in Cobequid.

Martin passed away after 1714, presumably in Cobequid.
