William Blankenship is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A200937.

William held the rank of Private and served as a Gunner in the Virginia State line during the American Revolution. [1]. He applied for a military pension in 1835, but his application was rejected because he did not serve at least 6 months [2].

He appeared on the 1783 tax list for Chesterfield County, Virginia [3].

He was married at least twice:

  1. First wife Molly (Trent) Blankenship (abt.1765-1804). Molly was most likely the mother of most of his children. Their marriage ended with Molly's death in 1807.
  2. After Molly's death in 1804, he married Mary Martha (Riggins) Blankenship (1761-1807). Their marriage ended with Mary's death in 1807.

William settled in Kentucky, and this was the beginning of the Blankenships in Pike Co., KY.

He passed away in 1835 [1] [4]. Transcribed from his bio on Find a Grave:

"Beloved son of Isham Blankenship and Sarah Wilkinson. He was the wife of Molly Trent (1775-1894). Their children were Zachariah Blankenship (1780–1850); Conley Blankenship (1782–1850); Obediah Blankenship (1784–1850); Solomon Blankenship (1786–unk); Henry Blankenship (1790–1865); William Blankenship Jr (1790–1835); William Andrew Blankenship (1790–1879); Virginia Blankenship (1792–1841); Presley Blankenship (1796–unk); Hezekiah Blankenship (1800–1842); Solomon Blankenship (1802–unk); Spencer Blankenship (1804-1880). After Molly's death in childbirth, William remarried Mary Martha Riggins (1761–1807). They had one son, Isham Blankenship who was born and died with his mother in childbirth. William then married Anna Osborne (1792-1835), and their children were William Blankenship (1808–unk) and Barnett Blankenship (1811–1880)."

Research Notes

  • William's bio on Find a Grave lists a third wife, Anna Osborne (1792-1835). Anna was more likely the wife of William's son William "Buck" Blankenship, Jr. There are numerous sources showing Anna's marriage to William Buck and their children, including the two sons William and Barnett mentioned in the Find a Grave bio.
  • William first appears along with his two sons Conley, and Obediah, in Floyd Co., KY in 1810. which was later known as Pike Co., KY. William and his two sons were the first Blankenship's found in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. William was about 49 years old at the time, and Conley was about 28 years old, while Obadiah was about 20 years old. and married at the time. http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch
  • Obediah was born about 1784 in VA, and was the son of William Blankenship born in 1761 in VA. William married Molly Trent the 1st time and Mary Riggins the 2nd time. Which of these two women that was the mother of his children in unknown. Although unsourced, his biography on Find a Grave lists his children with each wife [4].
  • William and Obediah were in the first population Census of Pike County, KY, in 1830. William Blankenship died in 1840 in Pike Co., KY at the age of 79 years old." letter from Donald Blankenship 10 Dec 1990 GLR. [5]
