Biography

Elizabeth Blennerhasset was the daughter of John Blennerhasset and Elizabeth Cornwallis daughter of Sir John Cornwallis.[1][2]

It is estimated that Elizabeth was born about 1540, probably in Norfolk or Suffolk, England. This estimate fits within her wider family framework as no authoritative source was found and there were clear errors in some sources which confused the issue (see Research Notes (below)).

On June 29, 1561 Elizabeth married Lionel Throckmorton[3] at Barsham, Suffolk, England.[1][2][4]

Elizabeth was Lionel's second wife. He had previously married Elizabeth Kempe, daughter of Bartholmew Kemp of Gissing, Norfolk. They had no children.[1][2]

Elizabeth and Lionel had at least six children:

Lionel Throckmorton died on 24 November 1599, and was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Bungay, Suffolk. He left a will dated 22 May 1599, proved 7 December 1599. [1][2] Elizabeth was appointed executrix and bequeathed all moveable goods together with Lionel's free and copyhold lands in Suffolk for the term of her life after which they would go to his sons, Bassingbourne and Robert.[8]

Elizabeth died between 30 June 1608 when she made her will and 7 November 1608 when it was proved probate.[1][2] A summary of her will is[8]:

  • To be buried besides her late husband Lyonell at Holy Trinity Churchyard, Bungay, Suffolk.
  • To her son Bassingbourne, the leases left to him by her husband and certain silver previously left by his grandmother Mrs Duke.
  • To Bassingbourne's wife, certain goods.
  • Bassingbourne to pay his daughters Elizabeth and Mary ten pounds each on attaining 21 years or marriage. To his son Lyonell five pounds on attaining 21 years and to divide ten pounds among the rest of his children on attaining 21 years.
  • To her son Robert, certain goods plus he to pay twenty pounds each to the two sons of her daughter Katherine on attaining 21 years and to his own daughter Anne five pounds on attaining 21 years.
  • To grandchildren Richard and Frances Venior, certain silver.
  • To neice Elizabeth Cornwallis, a ring.
  • To her daughter Elizabeth Venyor, a ring, etc.
  • To sister Gurney, sister Atkins and brothers George and Richard Blennerhasset, each a ring.
  • Her son Robert to be sole executor and brother John Blennerhasset to be supervisor.

Research Notes

Year of Birth

Moriarty incorrectly states Elizabeth was born about 1522[9], perhaps confusing her with her mother, Elizabeth Cornwallis who was born about 1522 according to Richardson.[1][2] Her mother's oldest brother, Thomas Cornwallis, was born in about 1518/9[10] and was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on 16 February 1538/9:[11] those dates for Thomas pretty well rule out a 1522 birth date for the Elizabeth of this profile.

Her mother, Elizabeth Cornwallis, died between April 1544 (when her father, John Cornwallis', wrote his will)[12] and when her father remarried some time before 1546.[13] Elizabeth was born between the time her parents married (date unknown, but probably in the late 1530's) and her mother's death. Circa 1540 is a logical fit within the family structure. It means her mother would have been about 20 at the time of her birth. It also fits with her siblings whose birth years range from 1529 - 1555. It also fits with Elizabeth being of an age to bear at least six children from the early 1560's onwards.

Children

Lionel's memorial inscription says he had three sons and two daughters, but does not name them.[14] Three daughters are named in the biography above: Mary, Elizabeth and Katherine. Of these:

  • Katherine and Elizabeth (wife of Richard Senior) are named in the will of their mother Elizabeth Blennerhasset[8]
  • the source for Mary, said to have died young, is the Harleian Society edition of Norfolk Visitations[5] (she is also named by Douglas Richardson,[1][2] but he appears to have been relying on the Norfolk Visitations).

The memorial inscription may have ignored a child who possibly died in early childhood.

Previously-shown Daughter Ann

Ann Throckmorton has previously been attached as a daughter of Lionel Throckmorton and Elizabeth Blennerhasset. No reliable evidence has been found for this, and her profile lacks reliable sourcing. Please see what is said above about Elizabeth's children.

Suffolk Visitations

An additional pedigree (not actually in the Visitations themselves) in Walter Metcalfe's edition of the Visitations of Suffolk 1561, 1577 and 1612 incorrectly lists Bassingbourne Throckmorton's children as issue of Lionel Throckmorton and Elizabeth Blennerhasset.[15]
