Biography

William Blevins was fathering children with Sarah Troxel as his Indian law wife by 1809 and she bore him children between 1809 and 1818. Sarah Troxel was born between 1785 and 1790 but many believe she was born ca 1795 as census records sometimes show William's family with the wife not listed by name. Sarah was living in Carter Co., about 1830 with her sons Ryal (Riley’s nickname), William and James.[1]

Sarah and her second husband Thomas Bell apparently moved to Wayne Co. KY prior to 1832 which is where Sarah was originally from and she likely still had family there.

William fathered his first child with Ava Collins about 1817. Ava is thought to have been born ca 1795 in North Carolina. William reportedly called Sarah ‘Sary’ and Ava “Avy”.

Both Sarah and Ava bore a child of William’s in 1818, during which time William took Ava (Avy) Collins as his wife.

By then Sarah Troxel had bore him five children and perhaps a sixth.

The Sarah Blevins who married a William Blevins and who was the mother of James Blevins, William Blevins, Rebecca (Blevins) Williams, Riley Blevins and Rachel (Blevins) Wilson seems to have still been living in Carter County, Kentucky as a widow in 1850 and 1860, according to census records. I don't believe there is any possibility she remarried a Bell and moved away. I believe different women are likely being conflated together in this current version of the entry.

None of the info on this profile makes sense. Sally Troxell of Wayne County, KY married Thomas Bell there in 1819. They seem to have a number of documented children born beginning about 1819.

Kathy, I'm thinking that Sarah Troxel Bell needs detaching from this Blevins line. I'll work on the disputed relations paragraph for her profile.

Blevins-1739 and Blevins-218 appear to represent the same person because: Born same time frame and same wife..

The following was submitted by noted Blevins family researcher Ron Blevins and I find his position to be correct except that Levi Blevins was a nephew rather than a brother to William and William’s first wife was indeed named Sarah – namely Sarah Troxel.

WILLIAM AND AVA (COLLINS) BLEVINS FAMILY William Blevins (born in VA ca 1784; died in Madison Co, Arkansas in 1872; married second in the early 1820’s, Ava Collins (ca 1795-ca 1875) who died in MO per Ruth Baird. The name of William’s first wife is unknown to me although Charles Barker speculated that her given name was Sarah. William’s history is so closely associated with that of his probable brother Levi that persons interested in this family should thoroughly study discussions of Levi.

I list 16 siblings of William Blevins b. ca 1786. Many are half siblings as Williams father had children with Hannah Osborne, Rachel Skaggs and Lydia Peppers between 1786 (William) and 1825 (Elijah).

Family tradition in my family is that our ancestor William Blevins and his mother Hannah Osborne were essentially abandoned by William's father Nathan when he was but a small boy and James Blevins (ca 1755 - 1843) adopted the family that included Hannah, William b. 1786, Mary b. 1788 and Charles b. 1790. Hannah later married James Blevins in 1793.

Sarah Troxel actually had two sisters who it seems legally married a Blevins man but Sarah herself may have only married William Blevins in the Indian tradition which was if a man had a family with a Native American woman and if he lived with and provided for them they were usually considered married and a family.

Jacob Troxel and Cornblossom’s seven children are mentioned in the book “Jonathan Blevins Sr. of Virginia and His Descendants” by Laccie W. and Ray E. Blevins who listed what information they had found on Jacob and Cornblossom’s seven children. Peter “Little Jake” b. 1781 m. unknown d, 1810 Catherine “Katy” b. 1783 m. Jonathan Blevins Jr. April 7, 1803 d. 1813 Sarah “Sary” b. 1785 – 1789 m. (1) William Blevins #7 (2) Thomas Bell Mary “Polly” b. 1789 m. Talton Blevins on Nov. 21, 1807 Margaret “Peggy” b. 1789 m.
