Biography

Sarah (Blower) Morgan immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Sarah was born about 1616 based on her estimated marriage in 1636. She was NOT the daughter of William Tilley, as was initially believed-- even by Anderson as late as 1995 (but he revised this opinion by 2011).[1] She called William Tilley "father" in a 1660 letter. However, William's age based on epositions he gave calculate to a birth year of 1603/4; Sarah's own deposition calculates back to a birth of 1619-- when William would only have been 12. Anderson as well as (independently) Mary Beth Norton concluded that Sarah must have been daughter of Alice (Frost) Blower Tilley by Alice's first husband, Thomas Blower.

Sarah married first by 1636, Henry Lynn, a coastal trader, who by 1642, had absented himself to Virginia where he died soon, leaving her and four very young children to fend for themselves. The court in Maine ordered that his estate-- what there was of it-- be sold to support the children.

Sarah m2 by 15 May 1647 Hugh Gunnison. The following week, she had her Lynn children brought to Boston church for baptism.

She m3 after 20 July 1660 and before 1 July 1661... Capt. John Mitchell.

She m4 by 18 Jul 1665 Dr. Francis Morgan.

  1. Sarah Lynn, b. Boston 20 August 1636; m by 14 Mar 1658/9 William Rogers
  2. Elizabeth, b Boston 27 Mar 1638; m1 by 14 Mar 1658/9 William Sealey; m2 after 2 Apr 1672 Thomas Cowell
  3. Ephraim, b Boston 16 Jan 1639; m by 1667 Anne Lockwood
  4. Rebecca, b Boston 15 Feb 1645/6 [more like Feb 1641/2 based on her age at baptism]; no further record.

No reliable sources have been found to show that Mary (Morgan) Lewis (1638-1727) is Sarah and Francis Morgan's daughter and her profile has been detached.

Mary Morgan Lewis [Morgan-589] is linked as Sarah's daughter. However, she is not listed in Sarah's profile biography. Further, the dates and locations do not match up for her to be Sarah's daughter (or that of her husband Francis). Do any sources indicate that Sarah & Mary are indeed mother & daughter?

Update: this has been resolved and Mary has been detached from Sarah and her husband.

Apologies for the confusion about her origins. Anderson corrected his 1995 conclusions about her in his 2011 profile of her step-father William Tilley.
