LAST RITES FOR EX FIRE CHIEF
FUNERAL WEDNESDAY FOR WALTER BLUNT, 66

Charles City - Funeral services were to be held Wednesday at 2 pm at Grossman' s Chapel for Walter M Blunt, 66, chief of the Charles City Fire Dept for 25 years until his retirement in 1944, who died at the Cedar Valley Hospital Monday evening, death resulting from complications of emergency appendectomy 2 weeks ago. The Rev. James K Delahooke, pastor of the First Methodist Church was to officiate and interment to be at Riverside Cemetery.
A lifetime resident of this community, Walter M Blunt, son of William Blunt, a Civil War veteran and Charity Johnson Blunt was born Oct 15, 1879 near Charles City. He received his education in local schools. At the age of 18 years old, when the Spanish-American war broke out, he enlisted in the Army serving in Co D of the 49th Regiment of Iowa Infantry of Iowa Volunteers from April 26, 1898 until mustered out at Savannah Ga. May 18, 1899.
The whole regiment participated in ceremonies incident to the evacuation of Havana, Cuba by the Spaniards Jan 1, 1899. He served as an office in the Iowa National Guard for several years following his return home. For 25 of the approximately 35 years that he was a member of the city fire department, Mr. Blunt held the position of chief, not as a continuous term, however. During his regime, he witnessed many tragic scenes of fire and drowning, notably the Hildreth block $200,000 fire Feb 8 1935 and the Wright drownings in the 1920s.
He was united in marriage March 7, 1901 to Elizabeth Becker, Charles City, who died July 25, 1944. One daughter died in infancy and another daughter, Ruth, died in 1921. Surviving are two sons, Russell E. W. and Arthur W. Blunt, both of Charles City. Also two grandchildren, Karen Blunt and S 2/c Allen M Blunt who is aboard the USS CP Cecil, a destroyer which is to take part in the atomic bomb test at Bikini.
Brothers and sisters who survive are: Clarence M and I.C. (Sam) Blunt, Charles City; Mrs. G/B. Luck, Nashua; Mrs. Fred Hall, Rudd; Mrs. Edna Diehl and Mrs. Peter Hanson, S. Paul, Minn. and Mrs. Ida Swenson, St. Cloud, Minn.
Mr. Blunt was a member of the United Spanish War Veterans and of the Modern Woodmen of America lodge. He was a skillful cook and formerly took charge of the serving of many a fire department dinner, having become adept when employed at the Martin & Collins Restaurant here in his younger days.
His hobby was flower rising which he carried out on a large scale at 511 S Johnson Street, the family home for more than 30 years.[1]

He is buried with his wife at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa[2][3]
