Mary 'Polly' Bolling/Bowling was the daughter of John E. Bolling and Susan Sizemore. Her paternal grandparents were Rev. Jesse Bolling and Mary Polly Green. Mary's maternal grandparents were George All Sizemore and Agnes Shepherd. Mary Bowling was married to Jesse Combs, son of Elijah Combs and Sallie Roark.
