Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph Booth was born 27 Mar 1659 in Scituate, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, the son of John Booth ^[1] and Elizabeth (Granger) Booth. ^{[2] [3]}

About 1686 Joseph had a relationship with or married ^[4] Mary Sutton. Together they had a child whose name is not known about 1687. ^[3] The child may have died young. In any event, Joseph was taken to court in 1686-87, where he was fined and sentenced to pay child support to Mary Sutton. ^[2]

Joseph moved shortly thereafter to Sussex County, Delaware, where he was well established by 1690. He married Frances (Cowdry) Spencer, (she was the daughter of Benjamin Cowdry and widow of Capt. William Spencer) on 28 Nov 1690 in a Quaker service in Sussex Co., Delaware. ^[3] Together they had at least one child:

Joseph was active in community affairs in Sussex Co., Delaware, where he served on juries 1690 - 92; was a surveyor and overseer of highways; Justice of the Peace 1693 - 99, 1706 - 07, and 1714; and was a four-term member of the Pennsylvania Assembly for Sussex Co. and later for Kent Co. He had extensive land holdings on both sides of the Sussex - Kent border. He was styled a "Quaker carpenter" and by 1706 had become a Quaker minister, remaining so for the rest of his life.

Joseph's wife, [[Cowdry-43|Frances], died about 1708. Joseph married again on 20 Aug 1716 to Elinor (Heathered) Robinson, daughter of Thomas Heathered and widow of John Robinson, in Mispillion, Kent County, Delaware. She died before Joseph wrote his will on 10 Dec 1732.

Joseph died after 19 Mar 1733 when he was recorded as "sick and weak" in the Quaker Duck Creek Monthly Meeting in Kent Co., but before 28 Nov 1733, when his will was probated in Mispillion, Kent Co., Delaware. His will named a son, Joseph, and a grandson, Thomas. His death was reported at the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting of Friends, which called him a minister of Duck Creek MM.

Will

Joseph left most of his estate to his son, Joseph Booth, Junior, and his grandson, Thomas. He makes no provision for a wife -- it appears that Eleanor (Heathred) Robinson Booth predeceased her husband.

The will names two enslaved people: a boy named Simon and a girl named Theny. Both of these people were left to Joseph's grandson, Thomas.
