Biography

Oliver Booth was of Derbyshire and of the family from Barton Lancashire. He married Elizabeth Hatfeild of Whitfeild in Derbyshire [1] Note his father is not named.

Booth of Handsworth Woodhouse Oliver Booth of Derby, son of John Booth and Ann Brereton of Tatton, Cheshire, was born about 1517, he married Elizabeth Hatfield from Whitfield, Derbyshire, about 1547.

John Booth (1553-1613) was servant to Gilbert, Earl of Shrewsbury.

John Booth was born at Ballifield, Handsworth. On 15th January, 1576 he married Ann Revel (buried 24/06/1597), daughter of Thomas Revel (b1529) and Ann West(Nee More) of Treeton.

He had three daughters and co-heirs, who carried considerable property to their husbands and their descendants:

  1. Anne (b1579), the eldest married Thomas Stacye (1574-1632) of Ballifield on 18th May, 1597 at Handsworth. Thomas Stacye was the son of John Stacye (about 1539-1594) and Anne(about 1543-1609) nee Parker.
  2. Elizabeth (1582-1665) married 1. William Castleford of Worsborough and 2. Gervase Hanson, gentleman
  3. Catherine (b1583) married John Nodder (1580-1665) of Handsworth-Woodhouse.

The will of John Booth, dated 1613, was proved at Laughton-en-le-Morthen.. He gives to the poor of Handsworth, Sheffield, Attercliffe, Darnall, Rotherham, Whiston, Treeton, Catcliffe and Orgreave. He leaves the Manor of Worsborough to his son-in-law William Castleford and after some family - remainders to Charles Cavendish, second son of Sir Charles Cavendish, knight.

Attested copy will of John Bouthe of Handsworth Woodhouse (Y.), gent. 12 June 1613. To poor of Handsworth, 40s. To churchwardens there 'a33 6s. 8d. for good church books. To poor of Sheffeld, 20s., of Attercliff, 10s., of Darnell, 10s., of Rotherham, 20s., of Whiston, 10s., of Treeton, 10s., of Cattcliff, 10s., and of Orgrave, 6s. 8d. After death of wife Elizabeth, then to grandson John Nodder in house in Handsworth Woodhouse, glass, seeling, irons and iron ranges, brewing lead, great board in kitchen, 2 great tables in hall and 1 in parlour with all their seats and forms, and all bedsteads, except 1 for wife absolutely. To Thos. Newbould of Mosburgh, Eckington (Db.), yeoman, copyhold Morehall Close there. To Thos. Hobson of Westwell, Eckington, all other copyhold there. To daughter Elizabeth Castleford, 1 messuage at Darley Cliff Edge in manor of Worsburghe Yorkshire. To grandson John Castleford 1 messuage and premises in Worsburgh and Worsburgh Dale for rest of term. Testator being lord of Worsburgh, and brother-in-law Rob. Elmhirst holding 2 copyhold messuages called Houndhill and Elmehirst for 19s. 10d. p.a., now he quit of 17s. 10d. thereof, 2s. and other manorial incidents to remain. Manor of Worsburgh to son-in-law William Castleford and wife Elizabeth for lives, then to son John, with entail; in default to daughter Isabell; in default to Charles Cavendish, esq., 2nd son of Sir Chas. Cavendish. To wife Elizabeth, 1 messuage called Netherhouse in Handsworth Woodhouse, close adjoining and 1a. meadow in Mylnefield, for rest of term from St. John's College, Cambridge, paying 20s. p.a. to brother-in-law John Nodder, and son John; at her death premises to these. Wife executrix. Francis West of Rotherham and Rob. Elmehirst supervisors, having 20s. each. Parch..

In the will of George, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury , he left his servant John Booth all lands in Wodhowse, Hansworth for life. There is a memorial stone to him in Handsworth Church: 'Here lyeth the body of John Booth late of Hansworth-Woodhouse gentleman; servant to the right honourable Gilbert Earl of Shrewsbury. He was ... in the profession of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the same John died in the same Christian faith, the sixty first yere of age, the 16 day of June anno Domini 1613. And Ann his wife'

Research Notes

This person has been detached as son of John Booth (1527-bef.1564), due to his birth date being before his supposed father's birth. The Visitation source does not name his father. It states that he was of Derbyshire (presumably the north of the county), not the borough of Derby.
