Madame Louise was the youngest of Louis XV and Marie Leczynska's eight daughters.
She was raised at Fontevraud Abbey with her elder sisters Victoire, Sophie and Félicité. She returned to Versailles with Sophie in 1750.
Louise disliked Versailles and its intrigues. When, soon after her mother's death, her father Louis XV introduced his new mistress Madame du Barry at court, Louise requested to be admitted to the Carmel, where she wished to pray for her father.
Louise chose the Carmel of Saint-Denis, supposedly the poorest in France. She adopted the name Thérèse de Saint-Augustin, in honour of Teresa of Avila, and took the habit on 10 October 1770. She pronounced her vows on 12 September 1771.
Mother Thérèse de Saint-Augustin died on 23 December 1787 at the Carmel of Saint-Denis. She was declared Venerable by Pope Pius IX in 1873.
