Biography

Disputed Parents and Baptism

A previous version of this profile claimed that Anne who married Thomas Brownell was the Anne Bourne (aka Bourn) who was christened on 15 Feb 1606/7 at St. Michael Cornhill, London, England, the daughter of Richard Bourne and Judith Cowper.[1][2]

However, this Anne Bourne's mother Judith (Cowper) Hill left a will dated 20 Jan 1653 in England. In this will she call's her daughter Anne Bourne. She names other daughters using their married names. Neither is there any indication that her daughter Anne lived elsewhere. This implies that Anne Bourne, daughter of Richard Bourne and Judith his wife, was single in 1653, still living in England, and therefore was not the Anne Bourne married to Thomas Brownell in 1637 and living in New England. These parents have been disconnected.

She has also been proposed to be the daughter of Thomas Bourne and his wife Elizabeth of Marshfield. [3] As Thomas names his daughter "Ann Smith" in his will, they are also excluded from the list of possible parents.[4]

Estimated Birth

An estimated birth of 1615 has been used. She would be 24 when her first child was born and 40 when the last was born.

Marriage

Anne Bourne married Thomas Brownell-14, on 20 March 1637/8 at St. Benet's, London, England.[5][6]

Thomas was son of Robert Brownell-105 and Mary Wilson-5160,

Anne Bourne and Thomas Brownell immigrated in 1638.

Children of Anne Bourne and Thomas Brownell

  1. Mary b. 8 Dec 1639, d. 12 Jan 1738/39, married Robert Hazard
  2. Sarah b. 1642, d. 16 Sep 1676, married Gideon Freeborn on June 1, 1658
  3. Martha b. 1 May 1643, d. 15 Feb 1743/44, married first, Jeremiah Waite in 1658, and second, Charles Dyer
  4. George b. May 1646, d. 20 Apr 1718, married Susannah Pearse on December 4, 1673
  5. Ann b. 2 Apr 1647, d. 21 Apr 1747, married Joseph Wilbore
  6. William b. 1648, d. b 1 Aug 1715, married Sarah Smiton

  8. Robert b. 1652, d. 12 Jul 1728, married Mary Ladd
  9. Susanna b. 2 Jun 1655, d. after 27 April 1709, married Esek Carr. Susanna's last child, Thankful Carr, was born 1709;

Thomas Brownell met an untimely death on Sep. 24, 1664 and was buried in the George Brownell Lot, in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.

No record of Anne’s date or place of death or burial has been found. She was living on Oct. 24, 1666 when the Court of Trials, meeting in Newport, was presented with an indictment against William Long and Anne Brownell “for owning one another man and wife” despite being prohibited from doing so by the magistrates. They pleaded guilty and were fined. The Court prohibited Anne and William from living together as they were not married. [7] Thus Anne might have left the court’s jurisdiction to live (and die) elsewhere, e.g., nearby Little Compton (initially part of Plymouth Colony). [added Clark-67782 17:40, 8 January 2023 (UTC)]

"According to her Find A Grave Memorial, Ann is the daughter of Thomas Bourne and Elizabeth Martha Rouse. The administrator of the memorial refers to "extensive information about Thomas and his wife Anne Bourne at this web site: http://brownellfamily.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ The memorial gives this additional information:
"Note: According to grussell2005 - Stone is no longer visable. Since Thomas and Anne both died before Aquidneck Island had a stone carver, it isn't likely that their graves were ever marked with an inscribed stone (not to say that one could have been emplaced at a later date). More importantly, no inventory of Portsmouth historical cemeteries (dating back over 100 years) cite a listing for Thomas and Anne, hence my statement below. This is not to say that they are not buried in PO005, just to say there is no evidence one way or another. The original land holdings of Thomas do encompass the cemetery, but I don't believe that allows any positive conclusions other than they are probably buried somewhere on the property." [3]

Research Notes

Newport County was constituted on June 22, 1703, as one of the two original counties of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. As originally established, Newport County consisted of four towns: Portsmouth, Newport, Jamestown, and New Shoreham.

BOURNE, BROWNELL
9675. W.M.C.S. Feb. 10, 1940. Anne Bourne married Thomas Brownell at St. Benets, Paul’s Wharf, London, on March 20, 1637, and came with her husband to New England about 1640, and were of Braintree and later Portsmouth, R. I.

According to Savage, Thomas Bourne came from Tenterden, Kent, with his family to Plymouth about 1637, and died at Marshfield, 164(?), aged 83 years, so was born about 1581. The History of Duxbury says Thomas Bourne was born 1601 and died 1684, aged 83 years, but he may have been a son or another colonist.

According to Waters’ Gleanings, Abigail and Elizabeth Bourne of London were kinswomen of Samuel Shrimpton of Massachusetts of 1697. The Shrimptons came from Bethnal Green, Middlesex.

Daughter of Richard and Judith?

TAG 36:126, 127 (1960) Quotes the above Boston Transcript article, but makes no connection to parents.[8](https://www.americanancestors.org/DB283/i/11877/127/23572429) at AmericanAncestors ($)

(https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101073398479;view=1up;seq=682) Water's article just calls wife Ann.[9]

Rhode Island Roots: 21:100 (1995) in a footnote identifies Thomas Brownell's wife as Anne Bourne, but does not suggest parents.

Boston Evening Transcript Nov 14, 1917, p. 8, column 5. (1917) states that Thomas Brownell married Anne Bourne in London. So this was known before the 1940 Transcript article. (https://www.americanancestors.org/DB1655/i/37639/Nov-co4/0) at American Ancestors ($)

Whoops, don’t know how I did that! Anyway there are two Thomas Brownells floating around at the same time both of them married Annes. Look at Boyd’s inhabitants of London.

If the parents/baptism is disputed should not the date and place of birth be marked other than definitive?

The http://brownellfamily.rootsweb.ancestry.com takes you to ancestry.com because it no longer exists, not because ancestry.com is hiding something behind a paywall. There is nothing on the other side of that link even for subscribers. This is why you should include the information rather than just provide a link. All links will one day break.

As much as I would love to be able to have an identity to attach to Anne Bourne's parents -- for they are my direct ancestors -- in the absence of harder evidence I believe we have to go with the most likely explanation, which is that they were not Richard and Judith. The possibilities you point to, Diane, could be the case, but they are surely the exception rather than the rule. So I support, though not without reluctance, the disconnection. (BTW is there a dispositive reason why Judith's ultimate married surname, Hill, does not appear in either the primary or secondary header of her profile?)

The link to the family site at rootweb now takes the user to Ancestry. It is, in other words, now behind a pay wall. Some of us can see it, and some of us can't. Is there a way to fix that problem?

Regarding the idea that Judith Cowper Brownell Hill's will is determinative since it refers to Judith's daughter as Anne Bourne and not as Anne Brownell, I agree it raises a legitimate question. I do not agree that it also answers the question. We have all seen wills used to make points that fall well outside the distribution of property. Secondly, if - notice I do say IF - the Anne who married Thomas Brownell was Anne Bourne daughter of Richard and Judith, she would have been "Marrying down." I have never yet seen that choice go unpunished. Also, it appears the Bournes and the Cowper were Royalists, and that at least Thomas Brownell on the other side of the divide. This could also produce enough friction to inspire a woman to leave out the name of a son-in-law to whom she objected.

I agree-I don't see how they could be the same Anne Bourne.

The will has been posted to Mother Bourne's profile. I agree that Anne would have been named with her married name not her maiden name, so must have been single. She would not have been dtr of Richard and Judith and should be disconnected. Thoughts, objections?
