Sophia Elizabeth Bowden is born on November 4, 1989 in Stroud, New South Wales, Australia, the daughter of John Robert Bowden (1864-1955) and Sarah Elizabeth Nix (1869-1943). It is likely her father was a farmer. Stroud is about 50 kilometres inland from Port Stephens.

Sophia marries Bertruid James Parish (1889-1952) on February 8, 1910 in Stroud. Bertruid is from Dungog.

Sophia and Bertruid have four children:
