Biography

"James was born in Cape Elizabeth about 1789. He was shipwrecked near Halifax, NS, during the War of 1812, was imprisoned there, but finally escaped and married in 1815 in Tracadie, Antigonish Co. NS to Susan Pepitas, b. 1794.
In April 1822 he applied for a grant of land in Tracadie....He built a house and lived in Tracadie with his wife and fourteen children. Susan Bowie died in Tracadie 17 Dec 1872. James Bowie died there the following year."[1]

James Bowie was captured by the British in the Bay of Biscay off the west coast of France on 16 Mar 1813 during the War of 1812. James was aboard a vessel referred to as Independence captured by the HMS Supberb. On 22 Apr 1813, the Independence six person crew was transferred to the prison ship Hector. James was among a list of prisoners discharged from the Hector at Dartmoor Prison , England on 01 Jul 1813. James escaped Dartmoor with a group of French soldiers captured during the Napoleonic Wars. He arrived in Tracadie, Nova Scotia in 1815 with a small group of French soldiers and married a French bride, Suzanne Petitpas at Tracadie in 1817.
