Biography

George Washington Boyd was born 22 Jan 1859 in Buffalo Valley, Putnam, Tennessee, United States to Bransford Boyd and Elizabeth “Eliza Jane Jared. He was a well-known and highly respected farmer, living his entire life in the 11th Civil District of Putnam County.

1860 United States Census: George, age 1, is living with his parents, Bransford Boyd and Elizabeth “Eliza” Jane (Jared) Boyd and his siblings, Alexander, Elizabeth and William. Their home is located in Putnam County, 11th Civil District, Tennessee. [1]

1 Aug 1861: George’s father, Bransford Boyd, dies of disease at the General Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, not long after enlisting in the civil war.

1870 United States Census: George, age 11, is living in Putnam County, Tennessee, 11th Civil District, with his widowed mother and his brother William. [2]

1880 United States Census: George, age 21, is living in Putnam County, Tennessee, 11th Civil District, with his grandparents, John Jared and Elizabeth Ann Jared. [3]

9 Oct 1881: George Washington Boyd married Tennessee Carr [Naomi Tennessee “Tennie” Carr] on 9 Oct 1881 in Putnam County, Tennessee. [4]

Obituary: Published in the Putnam County Herald.

A well-known and highly respected farmer of this county died Tuesday of heart failure at his home near Buffalo Valley in the Eleventh District of TN. He was stricken with an acute attack of heart trouble and lived only a few hours. He was 65 years old and had lived all of his life in the Eleventh Civil District. He was a man of the strictest integrity and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a Mason. He is survived by his wife and five grown daughters, Mrs. Hattie Denny of Lebanon, Mrs. Cleveland Burch of Buffalo Valley, Mrs. Walter Payne of Cookeville, and Misses Dona Boyd and Gertrude Boyd of Gentry, the two latter being teachers in the public schools of this county. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Wednesday afternoon, followed by the interment of the remains in the family burial lot. The deceased leaves many relatives and a host of friends in this county who mourn his death. His influence was always exerted for the right and he was indeed a good man and a useful citizen. [9]

Burial: George Washington Boyd, aged 65, is buried in the Boyd-Russel-Young Cemetery in Boma, Putnam County, Tennessee. [10]

Re: Death Certificate: His father’s name on the death certificate is incorrect. His father, Bransford Boyd, died at a young age as a soldier in the Civil War. Jefferson Boyd, listed as his father, is actually his uncle.
