Biography

James was born about 1835. He is the son of George Boyer and Chloe Churchill.

BOYER COMPANY

1855 The boot, shoe and harness manufacturing industry was founded by James W Boyer. About 1895 his son J Fred Boyer & J B Bowser (son in law) became associated with him in the business. From an article written in 1901 we quote: "Since its inception the business has developed to such an extent as to require the full capacity of a three story building, and employing from 20 to 30 hands who are engaged in the manufacturing of heavy shoes, lumbermen's river driving boots were made for driving logs down the river and completely made of leather, were black in color and considered to be the best made in the province. These shoes, once sold to the logger, had corks screwed in the bottom of the sole to enable the man to stay on the floating timber; harnesses of all kinds, being the principal products. Long-legged boots were popular. All these goods were shipped to other parts of the country.

Carleton Sentinel Newspaper July 9, 1898 Badly Injured Mr. James W Boyer, manufacturer, Victoria Corner, had a close call on Wednesday afternoon of last week. He had started to drive from his home to Jacksontown, but had not proceeded more than a quarter of a mile, when the reins got under the tail of his horse, which was a spirited animal, causing him to run away, tipping over the wagon, and throwing Mr. Boyer out and against the fence. Mr. Boyer does not know whether he lost consciousness or not, but however, after a time he succeeded, unaided, in some manner, in making his way home. A doctor was at once called who found that two ribs were broken, and a severe shock had been given to the system, but fortunately there was no apparent internal injury. Mr. Boyer at first suffered a great deal of pain, but is now comparatively free from that. The doctor in attendance fears it will be several weeks before the patient can get about again.
