Biography

He is the son of Solomon Boykin. [1]

OCCUPATION and SERVICE Although he was almost certainly a farmer, he also served on the general Standing Committee of the Republican Party Committee of Correspondence in Virginia in 1800 as one of the representatives for the Isle of Wight County. His job was to monitor the local vote for presidential and congressional offices and to advise the statewide representatives of the outcome. In 1807 he served on a committee to organize the first Protestant church in Washington Co, Mississippi Territory. Several years later, after Clarke County, Alabama, was formed, but prior to being admitted to the Union, he served on a committee appointed by the Territorial Commission to find a suitable location for a new courthouse for the county. He also served the community in various other capacities, some as appointed by the courts. Evidently, he and his family were well-respected citizens.

MOVE FROM GEORGIA TO MISSISSIPPI In January of 1803 Solomon Jr moved his family from Georgia to Washington County, Mississippi Territory, into the area which is now western Alabama. James A. was an infant, age four months. The long overland journey in covered wagons took about 16 weeks. The family arrived intact and without loss of life. The first settlement of the Solomon Boykin Jr family in Washington County, was on the 502 acre pre-emption at Bassett's Creek and near the place called Boykin's Ford. MILITARY SERVICE During his life Solomon Jr. served as a private soldier in the Georgia Continental Line against the British during the American Revolution. Little other information is known about his service, but it was sufficient for him to receive a land grant of 502 acres at Bassetts Creek, Washington County, Alabama, in 1804, where his brother Francis Boykin settled who was a Major in the Revolutionary War. His brothers Jessey and Byus [Tobias] also were in the war.
