Mary Brand was 2nd wife of major David Scott. She married Revolutionary War vet, major David Scott after the 1815 death of his 1st wife, Rachel _______ in Monongalia County.[1]
It is presumed that urgently needing a wife, David Scott m. Mary Brand in Monongalia, Virginia abt. 1816. "The History of the Scott Family of Monongalia Virginia" is very clear that Mary Brand was the mother of David Scott's children. But she was biological parent to none of them. The children's biological mother was Rachel (unknown) Scott, who died abt. 1815.[1]
- not a Marriage Bond record... but David Scott names his 2nd spouse, "my loving wife, Mary" in his Mar 1842 Last Will and Testament[2] And then, of course, we find two records of the 28 May 1817 marriage in Monongalia, VA (w the correct bride's father)[3][4]
Mary outlived husband David by seven years. In David's 1782 Last Will & Testament, he named Mary, "my loving wife", and his living children as heirs.
About Rachel_____ & Rachel Brand
The record is clear that Joseph & Frances (Whitlock) Brand lived their entire lives in Albemarle County, Virginia. In the face of that fact, how people insist that Mary was born in Monongalia County, Virginia (which is nearly 200 miles away from Albemarle County) seems unsupportable. And of course the reason is that these are not her parents. We are seeking evidence of her true parentage (perhaps in Monongalia County births index, 1796-1850, Monongalia County, West Virginia County Clerk).
Rachel (Brand) Scott b. 1767 was not the dau of Joseph & Frances (Whitlock) Brand, of Albemarle County, Virginia. Joseph Brand's Will and family Bible records list all of the Brand children. In no instance do these records include a daughter named "Rachel" or "Mary" [5][6]
Birth - Death
- Pre-computer-age Sons of American Revolution ("SAR") applications (both were awarded membership) state that Rachel was 1) born 1768 and 2) died in 1815/16 (refs: see 1942 & 1966 below).
West Virginia, Deaths Index, 1853-1973 says Mary Scott was b. 1767, and d. 8 Nov 1853. [7] This DOB is plausible. But this death is three months after her Monongalia probate was recorded and took place in Randolph, Virginia, 300 miles south of the Monongalia farm and home where Mary lived.

not a Marriage Bond record... but in A History of the Scott Family, the record shows list of the children of James & Elizabeth Scott. For son David, the record shows he married 1st Rachel _____; and 2nd Mary Brand.[1]
FOUR Sons of the American Revolution applications refer to this marriage giving several dates. But in every one of them they name David Scott's 1st wife, Rachel ____.
“Mary Brand married David Scott; but no record of their marriage has been discovered. He was one of that large family of Scotts, who took an important part in the settlement of Monongalia County. Mary Scott had no children. David had been married previously, and, judging from his will, had at least twelve children. His death occurred in the month of March, 1846. His will is recorded in Will Book No. 1, at page 177. One clause of this will reads "I do hereby constitute and appoint my wife, Mary Scott, and my brother-in-law, James Brand, executor of this my last will and testament". As James Brand died in 1844, Mary Scott alone qualified as the executrix of her husband's will, March 23, 1846. Caleb Tanzey became her bondsman. Later he became dissatisfied and asked the County Court to release him as surety. When she made no objection the court did so on the 25th day of October, 1847. However, she had her brother John Brand on hand to become her surety in a new bond.
Mary Scott was very fond of horseback riding and was skilled in the management of horses. When about seventy years of age she was seen riding her horse in a gallop up the road past the John Brand homestead. Later when she was asked by some members of the family why she was riding so fast on that occasion, she replied that she did so to keep her horse from scaring at the ice, which the high water had left in the road.
Her will was made on the 9th day of September. 1853, and proved before the Clerk of the Circuit Court on the 15th of the same month, which shows that her death took place between those two dates.” (“The Brand Family of Monongalia” pg 27-29)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
In his Will, Scott-13785 names his wifes brother as James Brand. Joseph & Fannie Brand of Albemarle, VA did have a son, James, as evidenced in Joseph Brands Will (see previous comment). But we know from Josephs Will that Joseph & Fannie had no child named Rachel. Therefore, Joseph & Fannies James cannot be the brother of Scott-13785s wife. It follows that while she may be a Brand w a brother James, Scott-13785s wife, Brand-1099, cannot be the dau of Joseph & Fannie Brand.
Will of Joseph Brand 1740-1814 of Albemarle, Virginia (husband to Frances "Fannie" Whitlock 1755-1832) clearly and repeatedly names his children: Benjamin, Sarah, Wm, James, Joseph, Chiles, David, Robert, Eliza, George, John. The Will repeats this list of his "ten children" three times. Joseph includes a bequeath for "my daughter Fanny Huckstep" (and names her hubby, David Huckstep). There is no Rachel in his list of children. Joseph's Will is clear who his children are. Rachel is NOT the dau of Joseph and Frances Brand. Q: where does Brand-1099's family name come from?
Doesn't appear that any of Joseph's siblings immigrated to North America. Perhaps another Brand family in Monongalia County?
