Biography

Elizabeth Bridgwood was born about 1789 in Felford Stone, Staffordshire, England. She was the daughter of Sampson and Elizabeth "Betty" (Sheldon) Bridgwood. Elizabeth's approximate birth year is inferred from her reported age in the 1851 census as being 62 years. Her birth location is noted in this same 1851 Census. This information is commensurate with enumeration per England's 1841 Census taken in Staffordshire, Stoke Upon Trent, Lane End, District 14.

Elizabeth married Jas (James) Davenport (from Stoke) on May 8, 1803 at St. Giles Church, in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England. Their marriage was witnessed by Harry Hill and Jas Benton.

Elizabeth and James reportedly had the following children: Kitty, Kelly, Alishia, Sampson, Ann, James, George, William, Thomas, Mary, Martha, Ellen, Jacob, and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a "straw bonnet maker" in Stoke. Elizabeth (age 50) was head of household as recorded in England's Census 1841. Children named William (age 20), Thomas (age 16), Jacob (age 14), and George (age 12) are also listed as part of her household.

In the 1851 Census record, Elizabeth Davonport is listed as living with her sister, Ann Elkin, both recorded as "widows." Residing also within this household is George and Martha (Davonport) Fry with their two sons George and Robert enumerated as such. Occupation of George (m. to Martha) is listed as a "Lab. Inspector of Police."

Elizabeth passed away and was buried on November 9, 1856 in Longton, Staffordshire, England.
