Sampson was born about 1754 (or before) in Abbot Bromley, Staffordshire, England. His birth year is inferred from his death record, his being recorded as age 68 years old in 1822, his year of death. He was the son of Samuel and Mary (Moss) Bridgwood.

Sampson married Elizabeth "Betty" Sheldon on February 15, 1773 at St. Michael's, in Stone, Stafford, England. Sampson and Betty had the following children: Betty/Elizabeth, Ann, Thomas, Ellen, Polly, Samuel, and Kitty.

Sampson was buried in Longton, Stafford, England on November 18, 1822.
