Biography

John was born in 1595. He passed away before 1687. He immigrated to New England before 1657 but was still in England as late as 1645, therefore, he was not formally part of the puritan great migration.

In 1619 he was named in the will of his father Richard.[1]

John was described as "son in law" (step son) in the 1621 will of Nicholas Tyndale, his step father.[2]

His sons Richard was born 1642 & William was born 1645 both in England and they immigrated with him after 1640.

There is no record of birth for Joanna but he did have a sister Joane. And there was another totally different Briggs family in Newport/Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

Also no record of birth for Hugh but he is mentioned in Taunton deeds along with his brothers William & Richard. And he was married in Taunton.

I placed a note to both managers of "find a grave on who is it at the Little Neck and Oakland Cemetery. When I lived in the Taunton area, I noticed how many of the Briggs family were buried in cemeteries all over that area. John being a common name also complicates the identification. Traditionally, you would find the family plot close to the place of death and family members near by. Marion is more likely to be one of the sea faring Briggs but it is not part of family tree as much as curiosity since I lived on a Briggs family property. Good luck on your search for the truth :)

The Littleneck Cemetery I gave for Briggs is in Marion, MA, formerly Rochester, MA which is about 20 miles SE of Taunton and nowhere near Boston.

As far a FAG accuracy, I agree it is wanting. The location you mentioned at Oakland Cemetery in Taunton on FAG actually does NOT have a John Briggs buried there. There are 90 burials recorded there and he is NOT one of them. This evidently was someones made up grave. The Littleneck death date is correct so I am back on that to find a reason for him possibly being buried there since the Taunton location is bogus.

Find a grave is not always accurate. During the 1600's people were buried close to their surrounding home, my bet is that he is buried in either a family plot, grave yard or cemetery in Taunton. Littleneck is miles above Boston which was already a hike and family lived in Taunton.

A good "find" Alan. I agree that the grave in Littleneck seemed inappropriate but someone had entered the info as if it was this John Briggs. Now to get someone to change the info on that other one as surely it is wrong.

HOWEVER, the Taunton FAG record indicates a death date of 1690 which cannot be correct as there are documents from his son(s) that say he (John their father) was deceased in 1687

John Briggs is most likely not burried in Littleneck since it is quite a distance from Taunton.
