Biography

Aubrey was the niece of Count Gilbert de Brionne. Her d. date of 1053 is based on the b. dates shown for the last children.

  • From Medieval Lands by Charles Cawley:

According to Orderic, "Baldric" came to Normandy with his brother Viger to serve Duke Richard II and married the niece of Gilbert de Brionne.[1] Baldric m. ---, daughter of ---. ("Gislebertus comes Brionnæ nepos Ricardi ducis Normannorum" married "neptem suam" to “Baldrico Teutonico”, who had come “cum Wigerio fratre suo in Normanniam” to serve “Ricardo duci”)

Orderic also states that the couple had "six sons and several daughters" ....[2] including:

  • Nicolas de Baqueville
  • Foulques d'Aunou
  • Robert de Courcy
  • Richard de Neuville
  • Baudri de Bocquencé
  • Viger de Apulia
  • Gunnora

Sources

  1. Orderic Vitalis (Prévost), Vol. II, Liber III, V, p. 75.
  2. Orderic Vitalis, Vol. II, Book III, p. 83.
  • Brucehassan. Says that Baldric, a knight of Robert, Duke of Normandy,...had married a great grand daughter of Richard, the first Duke of Normandy, and had six sons.
  • Geni. NN de Brionne, born c1000 and died 1014. Wife of Balderic. The commentary here states that her parents are uncertain, but possibly Geoffrey de Brionne. It seems that the DOB and DOD listed here are not consistent with with profile's listed children.

On checking many different sources the consensus appears to be Aubree was born later than 970 but before 975, her last child being Robert Courcy.

Yes, the dates for both Aubrey and her children are unknown and speculated, and they need to be changed to at least make it work. Orderic did list the given children as hers, so it's not a question of whether she is their mother.
Of the 8 children listed, only 3 Richard Neville, Viger Apulia and Baudry Bauquencey have birth dates that make it possible for Aubree to be their mother. The other 5 are born before she was, at the same time or when she would have been only 6 years old.

Brionne-28 and Brionne-8 appear to represent the same person because: Are these two gals one and the same? Just asking.

She can't be born after her oldest child, born c984. So a new DOB of c970 or before c970. Then her youngest children's DOB should be changed to before c1026, which is just after the birth of Richard. Even so, that would maker her about 56 at their births, which is highly unlikely.

It seems like the DOB of Robert in 1006 is the last realistic DOB, so perhaps the youngest should be changed to before c1010.

In response to Steve's comment below re: the DOB of her children, especially those of the last three, Viger, Baudry & Richard, whose b. & d. dates are unknown. When creating profiles here, a birth or death date must be included and since neither is/was known, a date of "bef. 1053" (father's d. date per Cawley), was used for now.

I would be grateful for any credible source ref. that would help us in this matter.

Geni has her father as Geoffrey (Godfrey) Brionne-3 (b.953) and her grandfather as Richard Normandie-41 (b933). But this would make her Gilbert's brother, not his niece.

Based on the dates, Geni's genealogy seems to make the most sense.

Gilbert Brionne is Brionne-16. Gilbert's Grandfather was Richard of Normandie-41. So it is possible to be the niece of Gilbert AND the GGD of Richard. So the sources could be correct.

There is a spread of at least 54 years in the ages of her listed children. I suspect the later ones have the wrong DOB.

"Neptis" means niece, so she is reported to be the niece of Gilbert, or the daughter of Gilbert's brother.
