Biography

Private Justus Brockway served with 4th Regiment, Albany County Militia, New York Militia during the American Revolution.

Justus Brockway is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A014771.

Justus was born in 1746 in Branford, New Haven Connecticut. He was the son of Samuel Brockway 2nd (1717–1806) and Margaret Smith (1725–1757). He was baptized on 30 November 1746.[1][2]

Justus married Alse Gardner in 1772.[3]

They came to New York from Connecticut where Justus leased a farm from the Van Rensselaer Manor at Little Hoosick, not far from Stephentown on 9 August 1773.[4]

Listed is Private Justus Brockway; Time of Entering Service, July 27, 1776; Time of Leaving the Service, July 28; Number of Days in Service, 2; Wages per Day, £1.9 and 1/4.1/3. Total amount of Wages, £3.6.2 and 2/3.[5]
  • 1784 Revolutionary War Rolls: "We the subscribers do hereby acknowledge to have received of Lieutenant Colonel John H. Beckman the several sums annexed to our names in certificates issued by the Treasurer of this state pursuant to an act of the legislature passed April 27th 1784 being for service performed by us or transfered to us from those who performed the same in the rigement Commanded by Colonel Keleian Van Renselar." Listed is Privae Justus Brockway, No. Certified, 1; Wages £1.10.11. [6]


During the Revolutionary War[7],

Justus Brockway served in the 4th Regiment of the Albany County, New York Militia, under Col. Kilian Van Rensselaer and Capt. Stephen Niles.[8][9]

They had 13 children (6 boys and 7 girls).

Justus died in 1827 at Stephentown.[12]

The Brockway Cemetery, in Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY is located 50 feet south of Jones Road on Madden Road. It is on the edge of a field against a fence at the right side of the road.
