Biography

Joshua was born about 1629, likely in England, [1]son of Thomas and Grace Brooks who came to Watertown, Massachusetts. [2] On December 16, 1679, Joshua Brooks aged about 50 years and Noah Brooks aged 23 years, testified in a court case between Samuel Buttrick and Richard Rice. [3] [1]

Joshua was a tanner, a trade that he is thought to have learned from his father-in-law Hugh Mason. [2] [1]

He served as Captain in the militia and as a Deacon in the church. [1]

He married Hannah Mason at Watertown on October 17, 1653. She was born at Watertown on September 23, 1636, the daughter of Captain Hugh and Hester (Wells) Mason. [2] [4] [5] [1]

Hugh Mason left bequests in his will to his children, including daughter Hannah Brooks. [5]

On November 11, 1695, Joshua sold his Concord lands to his four sons, Noah, Daniel, Joseph and Job, with the consent of his wife. [1]

By a deed dated August 24, 1697, the brothers Noah Brooks, Daniel Brooks Sen., Joseph Brooks Sen., Benjamin Pierce, Benjamin Whittemore, and Judah Potter, conveyed all the rights that Job Brooks had of the estate of his father Joshua Brooks, deceased, to their brother Hugh Brooks. [2] [1]

Under Children, Noah died 1 February 1738/9 at Concord (http://ma-vitalrecords.org). His death is not in the Lincoln records.

Brooks-2173 and Brooks-440 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate profiles of Joshua Brooks. See not on Bulletin board of Brooks-440. Thanks

Merge proposal Brooks-2173 into Brooks-440.

See: Threlfall, John Brooks. Thomas Brooks of Watertown and Concord. in: The American Genealogist, Vol. 53, New Haven, Connecticut, 1977, p. 94-98 Brooks-2173 has these corrections.

Birth est, 1629 by deposition. It is assumed he was born in England, not MA. The birth date entered here is that of Hannah Mason at Watertown.
His death is unknown, he signed deeds in Nov. 1695, but was listed as deceased in Aug., 1697
The article also clarifies that the son John listed by Gates/Bonds is actually the child of Timothy Brooks. John should be removed.
Also confirms that Elizabeth married Samuel Dakin and not Ebenezer Meriam as in Bond/Gates.
Confirms the LN of Dorothy, wife of Noah is Potter - not Wright.

Looks like this profile could use a cleanup in the bio and source section. I am hesitant to do this becuase of so many profile managers - I think one of you would do a better job! Thank you!

Brooks-440 and Brooks-5601 appear to represent the same person because: I was adding to my own family tree and wikitree did not flag this as a match until after I entered his father and mother, at which point the mother, Grace Wheeler, was flagged. I have a document which lists the father's name as Thomas instead of Henry but with no birth/death info.

The document is "Descendants of Phebe Walters and Isaac Lockwood" Library of Congress 76-18031. In this book, he is at the end of the line so I don't place much faith in that, just sharing the information.
