Biography

Elizabeth Brooks was born at Concord, Massachusetts on December 16, 1772, daughter of Joshua and Hannah (Mason) Brooks. [1] [2]

She married Simon Dakin in about 1693. He was born about 1663, son of Thomas and Susanna Dakin. [3]

They were members of the Dorchester group that sailed in December, 1695 to establish a colony and spread the Gospel in the Carolinas. They resided in South Carolina from 1696-1701, before returning to Concord. [2] [3]

1735: May: When petitions were presented to the General Court, to have parts of Lexington, Weston and Concord set off for the new town of Lincoln, Simon Dakin was one who signed in favor of the petition. [4]

Simon Dakin died at Concord, Massachusetts on January 11, 1739/40. [1] [2]

On February 25, 1739/40, John Remington, Justice made notification that the will of Simon Dakin, of Concord, deceased, would be allowed on March 10, 1739, unless the widow and/or heirs had objections. Samuel Dakin was charged with notifying the heirs. [5]

On March 10, 1739/40, Samuel Dakin, submitted to the court, papers indicating that he had notified the following persons:

  • Benjamin Brown
  • John Cheney
  • Jona. Dakin
  • Ebenezer Dakin [5]

On March 17, 1739/40 the judge proved and allowed the will, written on October 26, 1739, assigning widow Elizabeth Dakin as executrix. The entire estate was left to Elizabeth, and ordering that she maintain and support son Benjamin, the other children having already received their portions of the estate. [5]

Brooks-5011 and Brooks-4587 appear to represent the same person because: Cleaned up and sourced Brooks-5011, ready to merge INTO Brooks-4587

A Heads up note taken from Brooks-5011.

Brooks-5011 and Brooks-4587 are not ready to be merged because: There are disputes of which Elizabeth Brooks married Dakin, which need to be resolved prior to merging.

There are obviously more than one Elizabeth Brooks and Ebenezer Merriam's. One Ebenezer (c.1675-1777), possible son of John and Mary (Cooper) Merriam, who married 1st an Eliz. Brooks (who died est. 1740's), supposedly had 4 or 5 wives, the second being a Davis. There is also the Eliz. who married Simon Dakin. Sources conflict, indicating which Eliz., Gerhsom's or Joshua's married which man.

I found a source for a marriage of Ebenezer Merriam to a Jerusha Berry Feb. 13,1709 and then nine children born to he and Jerusha between 1711 and 1732. Only one child Ebenezer Jr. whose mother was Elizabeth was born in 1717.

Simon Dakin and Elizabeth had seven children between 1694 and 1712 all with sources showing Elizabeth as the mother. I refer to the record found in familysearch.org https://familysearch.org/tree/#view=ancestor&person=LZ29-Z5L

Elizabeth born 1680 and John Spencer are my fifth great grandparents. Thus my main interest in all this is the Ebenezer Mirriam connection, which Elizabeth Brooks did he marry? The birth patterns of the children of the Elizabeths and his with Jerusha leave doubt or questions about the Elizabeth Brooks connection.

Brooks-5011 and Brooks-4587 appear to represent the same person because: they have the same birthdate and parents. There was an Elizabeth Brooks married to Ebenezer Mirriam July 5 1705 but which one is uncertain at this point. The other Elizabeth Brooks was born 1680 with different parents and also was married to John Spencer.

Brooks-5011 and Brooks-4587 do not represent the same person because: No evidence that the Elizabeth Brooks that married Simon Dakin is the same woman who married Ebenezer Merriam.
