William served in the Union army during the Civil War. He was in Company A, 140th Illinois Infantry.
Civil War Veteran Dies at Lodi Home Death claimed another of the few remaining members of Hartford post, Grand Army of the Republic, last Saturday when William H. Brown, civil war veteran, passed away at the family home on East Lodi avenue following a long illness. Mr. Brown was born in Massachusetts on November 2, 1843. He came to California 18 years ago and has resided in Lodi for the past seven years. The deceased is survived by a daughter, Miss Edith M. Brown of Lodi; two sons, W. M. Brown of Lodi and A. H. Brown of Hastings, Nebraska, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Reed of Ontario, California. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Hale & Bawden chapel. Military Funeral for Civil War Veteran A military funeral was given William Henry Brown, aged Civil War veteran, who died at the family home here last Saturday, yesterday afternoon with members of Hartford post, G.A.R.; American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars, Spanish War Veterans, Battery F and Daughters of Union Veterans participating in the services. Hale & Batden were in charge, with interment in the Lodi cemetery. Bugler George Hieb sounded taps, with uniformed members of Lodi Battery F standing at attention. Pallbearers were Paul Sobkowsky and Peter Nelson of the Spanish War Veterans, George Westover and Charles Freeman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Tom King and John Guilfoyle of the American Legion. Honorary pallbearers were Comrads Millikin, Dietrich and S.S. Murphy. A quartet composed of Mrs. Charles Gruber, Mrs. Charles Peterson, Floyd Lyons and Max Froehnert sang.
