Biography

Joel was born in 1836. He was the son of Isaac Brown and Charity Yarrington. He passed away in 1912.

He married on 19 Dec1865 to Harriet "Hattie" Eliza Woodhull. Their children are:

  1. Ella (Brown) Singham
  2. Lulu Brown, died heroically while trying to rescue a drowning boy in Manasquan Beach
  3. Hattie (Brown) Watson (Mrs. Ripley Watson)

A lovely biography is presented in the Genealogical History of Hudson and Bergen Counties, New Jersey on pp 454-455[1] The son of a well-known sea captain, he received his primary education at Miller's Place Academy near Port Jefferson and his secondary education at a boarding school known as Fort Plain Seminary in Montgomery County, between Albany and Utica, New York. His occupational pursuits included teaching in Long Island , then real estate in Nebraska followed by 10 years at sea (1858-1868), being master of several different schooners in the Gulf of Mexico, and in the service of the United States during the Civil War. He retired from the sea in 1868, and went into the mercantile business in Newburgh, New York eventually serving continuously as the President of Brown Dry Dock Company.

According to his obituary[2], Joel died suddenly of heart failure on 22 Nov 1912 in Jersey City, New Jersey, and was the son of Mrs. Charles Brown. Discrepancies: date (22 v 25) name of mother -- Charity Brown or Mrs. Isaac Brown. More...Better.[3]
