Biography

Unlike most of his brothers, Zacharias did not move to East Tennessee in the 1780's. He chose to stay in the area his father settled in and he grew up in-- what is now Madison County, Virginia. He died before the age of 60 and apparently knew his time was short because he made a will. His widow Dilly went on to live for many more years.

The births of six of their children are recorded in the Birth Register of the Hebron Lutheran Church in present day Madison County, Virginia.[1] Keith provides the names of additional children, from Zacharias's will and "from other sources".[2]

3 Nov 1761 - Zacharias Broil is named in his father's will, and inherits "one hundred acres of land, a Beast, a Cow and Calf, and a Bed and a pot and a pan." Culpeper Co., Va.[3]

1775 - He is a sponsor at the baptism of Aaron Breil, son of Peter. His wife Dilly (Delilah) did a great deal of sponsoring.[2]

11 Mar 1778 - Zacharias Broile and wife Delilah, John Broile and wife Margaret sell 200 acres to Anthony Berry. This was inheritance land from their father Jacob.[4]

Jan 1781 - Zacheriah Broyle is member of class #76 liable for military service. He was not drafted. Culpeper Co., Virginia.[5]

1782 - He is taxed for 50 acres.[2]

31 Oct 1785 - Fisher Rice and wife Agga sell 100 acres to Zachary Broile.[2]

1785, 1787 - He is taxed for 100 acres.[2]

19 Oct 1789 - "inventory and appraisal of estate of Nicholas Crigler, dec'd." is made by Mark Finks, Reuben Crigler, and Zachy Broyle.[6]

10 Jan 1796 - He is security for his daughter Elizabeth's marriage to first cousin Zacharias Broyles, son of Peter. Madison Co., Virginia.

11 Aug 1797 - Zachary Broile and wife Delilah sell 6 acres of their 100 acre tract to Nicholas Crigler. Zacharias was taxed for 94 acres until his death.[2]

1793...1801 - Zacharias is taxed for personal property in Madison Co., Va.[7] This would indicate his death in 1802.

26 May 1802 - Zacharias writes his will. It mentions wife Delilah, daughters Susanney, Ana, Rodia, Barbara Catherine, Judith, and son Thomas. Witnesses were Wm. Smith Jr., John Fink, Simeon Gaar, Jacob Garr, and Robert Snyder. Executors of the will were Mark Finks, John Yager Jr., and Benjamin Broyles.[8]

27 Jan 1803 - The will is probated and the estate is ordered to be appraised.

26 Mar 1805 - The estate appraisal is recorded.[9]

His widow Delilah lived on until 1836.

Breil-6 and Broyles-81 appear to represent the same person because: Husband of Delilah Clore. He was a Broyles during his lifetime, Breil being one of the old forms of the name in early Germanna records.
