Research Notes

Vital Statistics

LNAB
Mary (____) was previously listed as being Mary Bryan. However, Mary's LNAB is unknown.

Birth
Her birth date is estimated from her husband John Lee's birth date, (about 1690 + average 3 years) = about 1693. However, exercise caution using this date as John's birth is not sourced either.

Marriage
Their marriage date is estimated from the birth of their son Edward Lee, (1725 - about 1 year) = about 1724.

Purported Marriage

John Lee was married to Mary (____), LNAB not known, naming her in his 4 December 1766 Will as Mary Lee.[2]

Mary (____) is purported to be Mary Bryan, the daughter of William and Alice MacLand Bryan. William Bryan is the son of John and Sarah Berryman Bryan. Alice MacLand is the daughter of John and Elizabeth (____) Bryan.

See Purported Marrage for a discussion of this unsourced marriage that has propagated and mutated to well over 10,000 on-line family trees.

This Mary (____) was previously listed as marrying John Lee Sr in 1723 in Nottoway, Isle of Wight, Colony of Virginia.[9]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Following up on step (2) of Ken Spratlin's recommended plan for resolving the Mary (Bryan) Lee dilemma, I've created a new, unattached profile for Mary Bryan at Mary Bryan (bef.1705-).

There's a brief explanatory note at the top of the narrative section. Interested researchers are invited to expand and improve the profile.

I will not attach the new profile in place of Bryan-269. I believe the US Southern Colonies Project should make this decision.

I think this has all been done. The new profile was attached as daughter on 10 Dec 2023. The three profiles (John, this Mary (Unknown) Lee, and Mary Bryan have been modified today to reflect the new identities of the two Marys.

A request to complete the last step of renaming the LNAB of this profile to "Unknown" has been made to a Project Leader.

Please review.

The marriage between a Mary Bryan and a John Lee is not reliably sourced. The source [1] for the marriage will be deleted in 3 days unless a reliable source is presented. It is then recommended (1) her LNAB be changed to Unknown and a research note added for a disputed marriage and (2) all reliably sourced facts for Mary Bryan be moved to a new profile attached to the Bryan parents.

Please leave a research note including the reasons for removing the connection which has proliferated in many online trees.

Why are John Lee-1662 and Mary Bryan-269 connected by marriage in the Data section of their profiles?

Maybe I’m missing something, but from what I can tell, the WikiTree tools for establishing and editing a marriage connection allow for adding the ‘uncertain/about’ status indicator for the date and/or place of a marriage … but not for the *fact* of the marriage itself.

On the basis of a single non-transparent secondary reference (i.e., not a source), Lee-1662 and Bryan-269 are connected by marriage in the WikiTree database. Neither the place nor year of this marriage is labelled as ‘uncertain’.

MY OPINION: In the absence of transparent primary sources, a strong case (or argument) should be made in a Research Note for *inferring* a marriage from other reliable facts and information before the marriage is established in the Data section. Secondary references, such as the one used in these profiles, can be elements of the case, but a single such reference should not be the sole element of the argument.

Is this WikiTree policy? If not, seems to me it should be.

Hi Ken,

I do not have a source for Mary Winfred Bryan Lee that verifies her date of birth or death. I hope we will be able to locate one. Thanks, Jim Haynes.

Date of birth appears to be from a Find A Grave citation with no gravestone photo.

Is there a source for this date?

The profile text for Lee-1662 says she was born c1706 with no source given.

I propose removing the middle name from the profile of Mary Winford (Bryan) Lee (1697 - abt. 1780). None of her close relatives have middle names. The middle name "Winford" probably comes from confusion with Margaret Winford (Howard) Lee who also married a John Lee. See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Howard-1596

I agree with Karen’s comment: remove the middle name.

Bryan-5836 and Bryan-269 appear to represent the same person because: I created this profile prior to realizing that one had already been created. Obviously, the birth dates are different, but I have no reason to doubt that the one in profile Bryan-269 is correct.

I am trying to determine if this Mary Bryan is my greatxGrandmother who married Phillip Bush in Orange Virginia. The birth dates would fit. All I know is her fathers name was William Bryan.

Managers: Please remove Lee-8298 Edward "G" Lee from this profile - he is not a child of Mary Bryan and John Lee, Esq. And not a DNA match to me, as I am a direct ancestor to RLee (Immigrant) through his son William Lee, to RHLee, his son, to JLX his son (spouse of Mary - this profile) to Edward Lee, thier son as listed in documents and sources. Thank you so much! Jacqueli

Irregardless of the differences in the two John Lee profiles (which also appear to be duplicates) the two Mary Bryan Lee profiles are clearly duplicates. John Esq Lee-21231 b 1690 VA d 1766 NC appears to be a dup of John Lee-15329 b 1690 VA d 1768 SC. John Lee-15329 contains reference to his will filed NC Dec 4, 1766 and probated 1768 NC. No where in that profile is found evidence that he died in South Carolina. Note the deaith date in Lee-21231 1766 NC which agrees with the year the will was filed and in Lee-15329 the death date of 1768 agrees with the date the will was probated, however the death place is given as SC for which no evidence is found. Both John Lees are married to a Mary Bryan Lee. Both Mary Bryan Lees have the same exact names, exact dates of death and birth, same locations and same children. Even though documentation was given to indicate the two John Lees are different no evidence was given that indicates the two Mary Bryan Lees were intended to be separate persons. And part of the evidence presented for John Lee d 1768 SC contradicts the location data posted in that profile (Lee-15329).

Bryan-4159 and Bryan-4158 appear to represent the same person because: Same given name, same LNAB, same birth and death dates, same locations, same spouse, same child. Please do not reject this merge unless there is proof to indicate these are not the same person.
