Research Notes

Record was orphaned & Kathy (Whitfield) Stepp adopted - too much of a mess. Hope someone else can figure her out. 12-22

  • I think there are duplicate records for Sarah & James: Bryant-10434. For James: Arrowood-68.
  • Parents: I am uncertain if the ones linked are correct. Her Findagrave page has a note: Dau. of Benjamin Bryant
  • Parents: Benjamin Bryant according to her Findagrave & FamilySearch pages.
  • Spouse #1: John Freeman abt. 1734 - . Her FamilySearch page lists 12 children.
  • Spouse #2: James William "Jim" Arrowood 1765 - 1854. He was 1st married to Elizabeth Crowder & they had 1 child (Jesse 1791 - 1866). Her FamilySearch page lists 12 children. Findagrave #149176069
  • Sarah (Bryant) Freeman, Arrowood: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GHV1-QWJ Lists her Father (Benjamin), spouse John & 12 children, spouse Elias, spouse James & 12 children, 43 sources/notes.
  • Notes from her FamilySearch page: Although some sources state that she was married to James Arrowood, it's not likely that she married Arrowood in 1784. She would have been 25 yrs old, but she was the mother of several of John Benjamin Freeman's children who were born as late as 1784. John Benjamin Freeman (her first husband) died in 1799. Elizabeth Arrowood (w/o James Arrowood) died after 1797.
  • It's possible these children might belong to James Arrowood and Sarah Bryant Arrowood:
    1. Squire Harwood born 1801 (in some records, John Hall? Harwood/Arrowood II is identified as his father and Esther Harwood/Arrowood II as his mother)
    2. Thomas Arrowood born Cherokee County, NC about 1804. No parents are listed in some records.
    3. Benjamin Franklin Arrowood born 1805 -- There is a different Benjamin Franklin Arrowood who was born in 1765, at birth place, North Carolina, to James Arrowood and Arrowood. This could be the child of Elizabeth Arrowood.
    4. Nathaniel Arwood born 1806 -- Nathaniel (Big Nate) Arrowood was born in 1806, at birth place, North Carolina, to James William Arrowood and Sarah B Arrowood (born Bryan).
    5. James was born on March 2 1763, in Maryland, USA.
    6. Sarah was born in 1759?, in Buncombe Co, North Carolina Colony. (If Sarah was born in 1769, she would have been 37 yrs. old in 1806. AMS)
    7. David Arrowood born 1808 -- (Sarah would have been 39 yrs. old. AMS)
    8. Edward Arrowood born about 1828
  • Notes for James William "JIm" Arrowood from his FamilySearch page: "He served in the Revolutionary War in the Battle of Monmount and in the Southern regions under General Green and under Francis Marion and at the Battle of King`s Mountain
  • James William Arrowood, son of James Arrowood of Maryland, was born in Maryland, before 1765. See his father's family for more information. James died after 1851 in Paint Fork, Madison, North Carolina, at age unknown.
  • He married Sarah Bryant, date unknown. Sarah was born abt. 1769. Sarah was the daughter of Benjamin Bryan. Sarah died date unknown at age unknown.
  • In the 1800 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Rowan, North Carolina. James and his wife were both age 45+. There were two girls and a boy age 10-15, and two boys and two girls all under age 10. The author believes that this is the correct census entry for James William. The alternatives are James Arrowood in Rutherford County, who was age 26-44, and James Arrowood in the adjacent militia company of Rowan County, who the author believes was James of Maryland, listed adjacent (in the census which is arranged alphabetically by militia companies within the county) to his presumed son, Henry.
  • James served on a jury, 7/1807 in Buncombe, North Carolina.
  • In the 1810 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Buncombe, North Carolina. He was age 45+; his wife was 26-44. The household included two girls under age 10, a boy and a girl 10-15, and two young men and a woman each 16-25.
  • In the 1830 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Buncombe, North Carolina. James was in his 60s. In the household were a young woman in her 20s, a girl 15-19, a boy 5-9, and a girl under 5. No old woman was listed in any of the nearby households.
  • In the Census of 1840, James was listed as a head of household in Yancey, North Carolina. James and his wife were in their 60s, with a young woman in her 20s and a girl and a boy each under age 5.
  • In the Census of 1850, James was listed as a head of household in Buncombe, North Carolina. He was 95; Sarah was 91. Susannah, 47, was a resident in the household. Although three sons have been attributed to him, it seems odd that none has been identified that was named after either grandfather.
  • Their daughter, Sarah Sallie Arrowood, married Joseph Ballard in Reems Creek Valley, Buncombe, North Carolina.
  • James's age may have been exaggerated in his later years. No census between 1800 and 1850 gives any indication that he was born prior to 1760.
  • In a note about his own family tree, Rev. John H. Ballard, a Free-Will Baptist minister, wrote, "James Arrowood was born in Pennsylvania and died in North Carolina at Paint Fork, Madison County, at age 100. His wife, --- Bryant, lived to be 102 years old. "James Arrowood served in the Revolutionary War in the Battle of Monmouth and in the Southern regions under General Green and under Francis Marion and at the Battle of King's Mountain. "He owned quite a lot of land on Paint Fork where it joins into Little Ivy. He had a lot of rowdy boys and had to dispose of a lot of his land to get his boys out of trouble; therefore the family had very little before he and his wife died.

The first child shown for Col William Bryan (ca. 1724-1781) and Elizabeth Smith (ca. 1729-1792) on FamilySearch is Lewis Bryan (ca. 1745-1782).

If this profile represents a correct child for them, please update FamilySearch and seek the sources. The birth date is prohibitive for Elizabeth, however.
